Off the Bench - 'the top four & finals'

Hello wsbl fans... I'm back. After taking a well earned rest and relaxation holiday I'm back to put together my current top contenders for the season.

A lot has changed since my last column and I've been busy on the ground catching up on the goss on what's been happening ... I mean some of those results and trends, what a difference a couple of weeks makes!

So without further procrastination, my thoughts on the top end of the ladder ... And as always, what would I know!

Slammers- winning form is great form and the big plus for them is that they have 2 posts and an import who on her night could go for 40!

The league is small and with their size and guard rotation of Donovan, Hargreaves and Cartwright they will be able to give the title a huge shake... No pun intended!

Depth is an issue but if they can keep key positional players on the court they will be a firm favourite for the title.

Game breaker- Hargreaves ... If she can stay on the floor and direct her team, they will be fine. If she's not on the floor, expect teams to get up and pressure their defenders.

Rockingham Flames- two words... Emma Cannon. I've said it before and will say it again, this girl is an basketball animal! I saw her 44 points and 20 Rebs performance and it was mind blowing . Obviously opponents Eastern Suns aren't the biggest team in the league and she exposed that to a tee! Yes she doesn't really score outside of the key but she doesn't need too! No one can stop her at the moment!

Very solid team line up with plenty of role players not least of which Kaye Tucker. The wily veteran is the glue that keeps the team together.

Game breaker- Cannon. Enough said.

Tigers- The girls are back in town... here comes the cavalry... whatever you like to call it, but they are back- in the form of Marsh, Hargreaves and Hooper for a full strength tilt at defending their title. The Tiger girls have done a great job winning and staying up the pointy end of the ladder despite the extended absences of the WNBL stars.

On their day, this team is a scoring machine and I make no apologies in saying that it may well be the other end of the floor that can lead them a little susceptible. Their strength is in the smalls and one wonders how Emma Lobb will handle the middle of the key when matched up against the giants of the league like Payne, Cannon, Harper & Ogoke if they end up matching up against those teams. If they are a chance, Lobby will have to command respect and control the middle of the key- something that she is more than capable of.

Game breaker- Hargreaves... if she can hit shots and do a job on the opposition scoring wing player like she knows how, this team will be more than a force to contend with- Marsh and Hooper will score freely, but Hargreaves is the key to keeping everything in check.

Now for the last spot- I leave it to you, I really don't know who it will be! I know it’s a cop out, but I won't be doing a fourth- I say let's watch and see who wins the fight for a top four berth! :)

Remember, catch a game, cheer hard and good luck to all the teams as we head into finals for some and mad Monday for others!
