Buccs call for local support

Buccaneers’ coach Ray Evans is encouraging Geraldton to get behind his side in their final regular season game at Activewest Stadium tomorrow night.

The Geraldton Buccaneers play the sixth-placed Perth Redbacks at 7.30pm, a win would send the Buccs into the finals and a loss would more than likely end their season.

Activewest Stadium is expected to be packed to the rafters for the clash.

Evans said his team are beginning to play the way he hoped they would all year and hoped fired up crowd would help continue the Buccs’ good form.

“I do not think we will have to control the boys’ emotions too much, let the emotions run, let them get excited about playing and getting out there,” he said.

“It has taken a while for the main five or six guys to be playing together, Morgan coming late then when he played Daniel Thomas broke his thumb.”

Evans said he and his players are confident they can claim the last playoff spot with a win.

“We’re confident that if we play like we have been then we can get the win and hopefully sneak into eighth spot,” he said.

“The game would be one of the biggest we have played in a couple of years for sure, probably since our semifinal against Willetton a few years ago.”

Perth already owns a week seven victory over the Buccs this season.

The 96-78 win was set up in the first quarter when the Redbacks went into quarter time with a 34-17 lead.

Evans said the home team’s transition game and intensity on defence would be the keys to victory.

He also singled out Redbacks point guard Joel Wagner as a player the home team will need to contain.
