Redbacks’ Teams Face Uphill Battles to Continue in Playoffs

The Perth Redbacks’ Men’s and Women’s State Basketball League teams both lost the first games in their respective best of three game quarter-final playoffs.

Both teams now face the uphill task of having to win the next two play-off games away from their home court to progress into the semi-finals.

The sixth-placed Redbacks’ men’s team failed to adjust to the loss of big-men Adrian Majstrovich and Michael Vigor, going down to the third-placed Cockburn Cougars 74 to 106.

The telling statistic was the rebound count, which was dominated by the Cougars 68 to 43.

Forward Blake Bender was the Redbacks’ highest scorer with 19 and seven rebounds.

Point-guard Joel Wagner scored 18 along with 10 assists and four rebounds while fellow point-guard Jake Burston scored 14.

The second playoff game between these teams will be at the Wally Hagan Stadium, Hamilton Hill this Saturday at 7.30PM with the third game, if required, on Sunday at midday at that stadium.

The sixth-placed Redbacks’ women’s team lost to the third-placed Bunbury Slammers 43 to 65.

Point-guard Rachel Lisch was the Redbacks’ highest scorer with nine along with two assists.

Centre Marita Payne had 12 rebounds along with eight points while shooting guard Narelle Henry scored seven and had two steals.

The Redbacks women’s team plays their second play-off game against the Slammers this Friday at the Eaton Recreation Centre at 7.30PM.

The third play-off game, if required, is also at Eaton on Saturday at 7.30PM.
