Lakeside shock defending champions (Women's quarter finals wrap)
Lakeside Lightning caused a big upset in week one quarter finals action of the women’s state basketball league, the seventh place team taking down the second place Willetton Tigers 64-58.
The Tigers were looking unbeatable going into the finals on the back of a seven game winning streak and although they bounced back after half time they were too far behind to close the deficit.
Leading the Lightning was Claire Johnson who finished with 20 points and nine rebounds, while import Jessica Seyler had16 points and 12 rebounds of her own for the home side.
WNBL trio Jasmine Hooper (17 points, seven rebounds), Courtney Hargreaves (14 points) and Melissa Marsh (12 points) were all in solid form for the Tigers who will look to regroup for next week.
Kalamunda Eastern Suns defeated the Rockingham Flames 73-64, the Flames were looking incredible throughout the regular season but the Eastern Suns were too strong on their home court.
Adrienne Jones was the star for Kalamunda with 24 points and eight rebounds, while Rachel Muenggenborg (14 points) and Cheney Armstrong (ten points) provided support. vIn their first finals appearance the South West Slammers defeated the sixth place Perth Redbacks 65-43, the Slammers came home strong with a 22-11 last quarter to seal the win.
Slammers imports Kim Sitzmann (19 points, ten rebounds) and Valerie Ogoke (13 points, 17 rebounds) were the stars, while Donelle Wallam stepped up with 14 points.
Minor premiers Wanneroo Wolves defeated the East Perth Eagles 62-39, the Wolves extended an eight point half time lead into a 16 point lead at the last break with a dominant third quarter.
The Wolves were led to victory by Shani Amos who had a game high 17 points, the Waves guard had an incredible shooting night with 66% from the field and 50% from three point territory.
New Canberra Capitals signing Sam Norwood was the Eagles best with 11 points and 13 rebounds, however the dominant centre struggled from the field connecting on just three of 16 shots.
All best-of-three series now move to the higher ranked teams home for games two and three, if necessary, next weekend.
