Thomas claims Buccs MVP

Daniel Thomas said it is a strong possibility he would play for the Geraldton Buccaneers in 2013.

Thomas was awarded the Dan Hunt Trophy on Saturday night but said he is yet to commit to anything for next season.

“It all depends on my work, if I can get a job in Perth or get a job here,” he said.

“I have to reapply for a job up here just to get one but the guys are interested in having me back so I am going to take a strong look at it.

“I’d like to comeback but if I do not we have possibly worked something out that maybe fly up Friday then fly back home.

“So if I end up having to go home for personal reasons then it is a possibility.”

The energetic point guard won the season’s MVP award from his back guard teammate, Michael Lay.

Thomas topped the Buccs’ scoring for season 2012 with an average of 22.4 points a game.

He also recorded more than six assists per game and 4.7 rebounds during his 22 games last season.

Thomas, who played for the East Perth Eagles in 2011, said his combination with Lay was a big contributor to his success this season.

“Having Mike (Lay) on the team, other team’s had to focus on one of us and that took the pressure off the other,” he said.

“One night I would play well and the other night Mike (Lay) would play well.

“I loved it because Mike never whines and never complains and just plays and I am the opposite, I get angry and frustrated but we complement each other well.”

Other honours handed out on the night included coach’s award which was won by Ben Svenson.

Buccs’ captain Mat Wundenberg was recognised as the team’s best defensive player.

Delma Shuttleworth and Ruth Rogers were rewarded for their years of service to the organisation with life membership.

Rogers was awarded a lifetime achievement award last year from the SBL while Shuttleworth has been with the Buccs from the start in 1989.

Thomas received the night’s final award and thanked his parents and girlfriend in his speech.

He also said Luke Wrensted would be a player to watch in 2013 and last season was his most enjoyable in the SBL.

“Passion for the game is a big thing we took out of the second half of the year, it all starts with that,” he said.

“If you are not there to win then there is no point playing so I think the enjoyment of playing is the big thing we will take from the second half of the year.”
