Flames, Cougars join Slammers and Eagles (Saturday night wrap)

Cockburn Cougars took down the Lakeside Lightning 102-92 to progress to their first grand final since 2003.

Going into the semi-finals as a lower ranked side the Cougars advance into the grand final, finishing the series 2-1.

The Lightning charged out of the gate leading 32-17 at the end of the first quarter, however the Cougars took control and entered the last period with an 18 point lead.

The Lightning rallied behind their home crowd and got the margin back to one point when their shots finally started to drop, however the Cougars steadied to pull out the win.

Jeremiah Wilson finished with 36 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Cougars with inspirational plays all game.

Damien Scott (16 points), Brian Carlwell (15 points, 14 rebounds) and Sheldon McIntyre (13 points, 11 assists) all provided support.

Ben Beran stepped up in the absence of fellow import Luke Payne to finish with 28 points and 15 rebounds, while Ryan Sofoulis (19 points) and Christopher Sofoulis (18 points) chipped in.

The Cougars will go on the play the East Perth Eagles in the grand final on Saturday September 1 at the WA Basketball Centre.

In the women's league a game three tie-breaker saw the Rockingham Flames take down minor premiers the Wanneroo Wolves 67-60 in a Wolves home game.

The Flames now move into their first ever grand final and will face the South West Slammers on Friday 31 August at the WA Basketball Centre.

The Flames were led to victory by Emma Cannon who had 28 points and 25 rebounds.

Kaye Tucker (13 points) backed up Cannon along with Jacinta Bourne who had eight points and nine rebounds.

Nikita-Lee Martin was the Wolves best with 16 points and eight rebounds.
