Slammers captain reaches milestone

In an added piece of inspiration for the South West Slammers, captain Lisa Cartwright will play her 250th game on Friday night in the Kickz101 women’s State Basketball League grand final.

Cartwright has played all thirteen seasons with the Slammers and has been the heart and soul of a team that, until this year, had not seen finals action in their history.

However on Friday night the team will put all of that behind them when they face the Rockingham Flames for the Len Woodlands Championship Trophy in Cartwrights 250th SBL game.

“When we started we were after some stability in a team with a large number of changes, as a local who has been around this program for a long time Lisa was the obvious choice as our captain” said Head Coach Darren Austin.

“She has done a wonderful job in that role, organising the team on and off the floor and is always looking after everyone and bringing the team together as a group.”

While the team will not be using the milestone as a focus in the game, Austin says that it may be something he calls on during the game for added inspiration.

“I know Lisa does not want to make this a distraction for the group, but it may be something that we use for some added inspiration during the game.”

“The girls are extremely happy for her to have reached the milestone and a grand final after twelve years around the club without any finals basketball.”

The SBL will be making a presentation before the game to Cartwright to recognise her 250th SBL game.

The women’s game will be played on Friday 31 August at 7:30pm at the WA Basketball Centre, tickets are available through Ticketmaster or at the door on the night.
