Cougars look to break drought

The Cockburn Cougars will head into tomorrow night’s men’s State Basketball League Grand Final looking for their first championship since 1992.

In 2012 the Cougars will be celebrating their 20th anniversary of their 1992 premiership; a team that featured SBL Games Record Holder Troy Clarke as well as NBL championship player Martin Cattalini.

The Cougars have appeared in SBL Grand Finals since (1993, 1998 & 2003) but have been unable to get over the last hurdle to championship victory.

Clarke is a 512 game SBL veteran and was in just his 99th game and fourth year of SBL action when the Cougars won their last premiership.

Twenty years on and Cougars captain Grant Davey acknowledged in an interview with The West Australian yesterday, it was something that had the club buzzing.

"It has been mentioned around the club over the last couple of weeks, the 20-year anniversary, so hopefully that might be a bit of good fortune for us," Davey said.

"There have always been quite big expectations on our club and we've always had quite good lists, but we just haven't been able to get over the line.

Also part of the 1992 success was Garry Field, an assistant coach with the team and father of current Cougars star and Wildcats training squad member Gavin Field.

Field, now 22, is pictured in the teams 1992 championship photo as a two and a half year old with his father and twenty years on he is a key to breaking the Cougars championship drought.

The swingman has worked his way into the starting line-up for the Cougars and is averaging 13.7 points, six rebounds and three assists in 22 games since returning from his senior year at West Georgia University in the USA.

Field’s solid SBL season has seen him earn a spot in the Wildcats current training squad as they prepare for their 2012/13 NBL season.

The game is expected to be close to a sell out with only a couple of hundred seats remaining and 100 standing room tickets available on the night for $15.00.

The men’s game will be played on Saturday 1 September at 7:30pm at the WA Basketball Centre, tickets are available through Ticketmaster or at the door on the night.
