Teams face double-headers (Week Two Men's Preview)

Two of the four teams playing double-headers in round two of the Men’s State Basketball League will be setting different targets to the other two this weekend.

Title hopefuls Wanneroo and Lakeside will be out to keep their unbeaten starts alive after winning their first-round matches last week, while Goldfields and Kalamunda are still looking to open their accounts for the new season.

Wanneroo smashed local rivals Stirling last week but can expect a tougher task on Saturday against East Perth, who ended the Wolves’ title defence last season at the semi-final stage.

Wanneroo then host Goldfields on Sunday, with the Giants also backing up from a game against Rockingham the previous night.

Andy Stewart’s Lakeside should start favourites in their games away to Kalamunda on Friday and at home to Mandurah the next night.

Kalamunda visit Stirling in their second game of the week on Saturday.

One of Rockingham and Goldfields will register their first win of the season when they meet on Saturday, with the Giants forced to back up on Sunday in a tough standalone fixture away to Wanneroo.

Geraldton will be without star import Jamine Peterson for their home game against reigning champions Cockburn after the American star was banned for two matches.

Peterson pleaded not guilty to “using abusive, threatening, obscene language or signs” and “acting in an unsportsmanlike manner in the stadium precincts or surrounds” following last Sunday’s loss to Mandurah.

The SBL tribunal handed out its penalty on Wednesday night.

The ban was a blow for Geraldton, who lost both games on their road trip last week despite Peterson registering 74 points and 23 rebounds in his first two appearances for the Buccaneers.

Perth Wildcats assistant Shawn Dennis will look to continue his good start in charge of league leaders Perry Lakes when they host South West Slammers on Saturday, while unbeaten Perth and Willetton meet on the same night.
