Wolves impress as Tigers, Magic continue strong starts (Women's Wrap)

Willetton, Wanneroo and Mandurah continued their strong starts to the 2013 Women’s State Basketball League season, maintaining their unbeaten records in round two.

The Tigers were the standout team in round one and backed it up on Saturday with a 60-50 win over Perth Redbacks.

West Coast Waves guard Antonia Edmondson (17 points) and Sophie Doyle (14) led the scoring for the Tigers, while Marita Payne (19 points) was the Redbacks’ only scorer in double figures.

Wanneroo thumped East Perth 86-39 in one of the most impressive displays in round two, with Nikita-Lee Martin (19 points), Casey Lockwood (16 points) and Ainsleigh Sanders (15 points, 8 rebounds) the most effective.

The battling Eagles have scored a total of just 72 points in their two games to date and could be in for a long season.

Mandurah edged a tight tussle for the second successive week with a 67-65 victory over Lakeside on the road on Saturday, following up a three-point win in round one.

It was the second of two defeats for Lakeside in as many games in round two after they were beaten 84-58 away to Kalamunda on Friday night.

Perry Lakes remain winless from three games after losing 60-43 at home to reigning champions South West Slammers, who opened their title defence in style.

Lauren Jeffers (15 points, 7 rebounds), Kimberley Sitzmann (12 points, 8 rebounds), Catherin Waycott (12 points, 5 rebounds) and Bianca Donovan (11 points, 7 rebounds) were all in good form for the Slammers, who won’t relinquish their title without a fight this year.

Stirling beat Kalamunda 77-62 in the final game of the round to open their account after two first-up defeats in round one.
