East Perth caps off big weekend (Sunday wrap)

Week 5 SBL action concluded on Sunday with the Rockingham Flames winning the only women's fixture and East Perth and Lakeside scoring comprehensive men's victories.

The day started at Mike Barnett Sports Complex with the Rockingham Flames beating the Lakeside Lightning 84-71. The Flames set up the win with a dominant 25-14 third quarter and held on in the last period to win by 13.

Samantha Whitcomb led the way for Rockingham with 22 points while Cortney Hargreaves added 18 points and five assists, and Mary-Alice Telfer 18 points and 11 rebounds. Kaye Tucker also had 14 points, five boards and three assists.

Krystal Stoneking top-scored for Lakeside with 20 points and six rebounds. Jessica Beran added 16 points and five boards, and Courtney Byrnes and Emily Fielding 11 points apiece.

The Lakeside Lightning men's team then bounced back from their women's loss with a 113-73 win over the Rockingham Flames largely on the back of a 44-point second quarter.

Justin Cecil scored 27 points for the Lightning with Ben Beran adding 18 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists. Jesse Dixon also scored 14 points with Jarrad Prue pulling in 18 boards.

Steven Bennett hit 22 points for Rockingham with Cooper Land adding 17 points and Travis Moore 12.

The People's Choice Eagles then backed up its big win over the Kalamunda Eastern Suns on Saturday night with another comfortable win on Sunday, beating the Sun City Plumbing Geraldton Buccaneers 125-102 at the Morley Sport and Recreation Centre.

Former NBL championship winner and 196-game veteran Drew Williamson led the way for the Eagles with 25 points and six assists on the back of a supremely efficient 8-of-11 shooting from the field and 4-of-6 from three-point territory.

It was another strong overall team performance for East Perth, though, with Joe-Alan Tupaea scoring 18 points and dishing out seven assists, Tom Jervis finishing with 16 points and 15 rebounds, and John Taylor 16 points and Nikola Donlagic 14.

Robert Kampman had a massive game for the Buccaneers with 35 points on 12-of-18 shooting from the field and 5-of-6 from beyond the arc. Aaron Ralph also scored 21 points and Daniel Thomas 19.
