Tigers stay in-touch with Wolves (Week 5 Women's Wrap)

Wanneroo’s impressive start to the 2013 Women’s State Basketball League season continued on the weekend, but Willetton remain within touching distance of the Wolves near the top of the ladder after five rounds.

Wanneroo registered a 73-52 win over Perry Lakes on Saturday – their fifth straight success – to maintain their place on top.

Shani Amos top-scored with 18 points and Casey Lockwood added 14 as the Wolves jumped out to a 21-point lead by three-quarter time before locking down the game in the final period.

Willetton won both games in a tough double-header over the weekend, beginning with a 74-70 overtime triumph against reigning champions South West Slammers.

The Tigers trailed at the end of each of the first three quarters but fought back in the last before edging the overtime period 9-5.

West Coast Waves stars Lisa Wallbutton and Antonia Edmondson stamped their authority on the contest with 25 and 16 points respectively.

The pair were at it again on Saturday dropping 18 points each to go with teammate Melissa Marsh’s 21 points as the Tigers won 78-65 on the road against Stirling.

The two victories gave Willetton a 4-1 start to the season after they suffered their first loss a week earlier.

East Perth remain last on the ladder after suffering a 72-55 loss away to Kalamunda, while Perth aren’t faring much better following a 72-62 home defeat to Rockingham.

Cockburn moved into third place and compounded South West’s disappointing weekend with a 66-54 win at Eaton, with Emma Pass (20 points) and Stephanie Jones (19) doing most of the damage.

Rockingham rounded out the weekend with an 84-71 win over Lakeside on Sunday thanks to big hauls from Samantha Whitcomb (22 points), Mary-Alice Telfer and Cortney Hargeaves (both 18).
