Flames draw first blood in Grand Final replay (Week 7 WSBL Wrap)

Last year’s runners-up Rockingham continued their march up the Women’s State Basketball League ladder with victory over reigning champions South West in round seven, extending their winning streak to six games.

The Flames gained some revenge for last year’s grand final defeat with a 112-63 thumping of the Slammers on their home court at Eaton.

Kimberly Stizmann nailed 21 points for South West but lacked support from her teammates and was the only Slammers player to reach double figures.

Conversely, Rockingham had plenty of avenues to the basket, with no less than five players reaching double figures.

Three of those – Samantha Whitcomb, Kaye Tucker and Jacinta Bourne – registered double-doubles.

Whitcomb (26 points, 10 rebounds), Tucker (19 points, 11 rebounds) and Bourne (13 points, 10 rebounds) were joined by young West Coast Waves star Darcee Garbin (26 points) and Courtney Hargraves (12 points) in double figures on the scoreboard.

While Rockingham were continuing their charge towards the top of the ladder, Wanneroo were busy protecting top spot and did so in fine style with a pair of wins in a tough double-header.

The Wolves beat Kalamunda 71-54 at home on Friday in a game where Nikita-Lee Martin starred with 27 points, and backed it up on Saturday with a 69-66 road win over Lakeside.

Martin scored 13 points against the Lightning, but it was Shani Amos (21 points) and Chelsea Burns (nine points, seven assists) who stood out.

Second-placed Willetton dropped their second game of the season on Saturday in a 63-59 defeat to Perry Lakes, while Perth beat East Perth 45-40 in a low-scoring grind.

Elsewhere, Cockburn scored a 77-69 win away to Mandurah to stay in touch with the top four while Lakeside picked up a 73-56 victory over East Perth in Thursday’s ANZAC day game.
