Flames turn up heat on contenders (Week 9 Women's Wrap)

Rockingham Flames look an unstoppable force after extending their winning streak to eight games and pinching top spot on the Women’s State Basketball League ladder.

The Flames, who were beaten by South West in last season’s grand final, started the new season 0-2 but have since turned into the hottest team in the league.

Rockingham leapt above Wanneroo with a thumping 73-47 win at the Mike Barnett Sports Complex on Friday.

The Flames led by five points at half-time and broke the game open with a 15-7 third period before running away with the result in the final term.

Samantha Whitcomb nailed a game-high 25 points and was backed up by 16 points from Jacinta Bourne.

WNBL guard Shani Amos scored 15 points but was the only Wolves player to reach double figures.
Wanneroo’s loss was compounded by another defeat on Saturday night, when they were beaten 74-61 by Willetton.

The Tigers relegated the Wolves to third place on the back of 22 points from West Coast Waves star Lisa Wallbutton, who also had 19 rebounds in a dominant display.

After starting the season 5-0, Wanneroo have hit a wall with three defeats in their past five games.

Kalamunda extended their winning streak to three games with wins over Willetton on Friday (79-61) and Perth Redbacks (60-51) on Saturday.

The wins moved the Suns into fourth place.

Mandurah stayed in touch with the top eight courtesy of consecutive wins over East Perth (61-42) and Stirling (56-53), in the process snapping a six-game losing streak that dated back to March.

The result against East Perth was the Eagles’ seventh successive defeat and kept the Morley-based side rooted to the foot of the ladder.
