Big weekends for Wolves, Flames, Hawks (Week 14 Women's Wrap)

The Wanneroo Wolves and Rockingham Flames moved clear on top of the women's SBL standings with an impressive weekend in Round 14 action with the Perry Lakes Hawks also recording a strong double of wins.

The action began on Friday night with two crucial matches with the Perry Lakes Hawks beating the Kalamunda Eastern Suns 74-72 in a thriller at WA Basketball Stadium.

The win improved Perry Lakes to an 8-6 record and brought Kalamunda down to 10-5 with both then replicating those results on Saturday night.

The Hawks backed up their win with a 65-48 win at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre over the one-win East Perth Eagles to move up to fifth position on the table at 9-6 having now recorded four consecutive victories.

Meanwhile, Kalamunda is now only just holding onto fourth position after also going down to the Rockingham Flames on Saturday night. The Flames won 89-68 to hand the Suns their first loss at Ray Owen Sports Centre for the season after eight straight home victories.

The other Friday night game saw the Willetton Tigers beat the top-of-the-table Wanneroo Wolves 62-51 at Willetton Basketball Stadium.

Neither side came away with the same result 24 hours later, though, with the Tigers losing to the 8-7 Lakeside Lightning to end the weekend in third position at 10-5 while the Wolves consolidated top spot at 11-4 with a 53-40 win at Joondalup Basketball Stadium over the Perth Redbacks.

Other results on Saturday night saw the Cockburn Cougars beat the South West Slammers 80-68 at Wally Hagan Stadium with the Cougars improving to a 10-7 record and the Slammers slipping 6-9.

The Stirling Senators scored a convincing 80-55 victory over the Mandurah Magic at Warwick Leisure Centre with Stirling improving to 7-9 in eighth positions and the Magic slipping 4-11 and stay 11th.

There were some standout individual performances as well with Samantha Whitcomb hitting 36 points for Rockingham against Kalamunda on Saturday, Gabriella Clayton had 24 for the Hawks against East Perth and Emily Fielding 28 for Lakeside against Willetton.
