Big weekend for Redbacks

The Bank of Queensland Redbacks’ men’s and women’s State Basketball League teams had strong wins over the East Perth Eagles.

The Redbacks’ men’s team beat the third-placed Eagles 105 to 91.

The game was in the balance with just under six-minutes to go when both Redbacks big-men were fouled out, leaving an opening for the Eagles talls to dominate the boards and take the game away.

However a combination of solid defence including a series of blocked shots, along with some big three-pointers from swing-man Bennie Lewis and shooting guard Jarrad Prior, saw the Redbacks’ score 16 in the six-minute run home securing the big win.

Lewis top-scored for the Redbacks with 33, eight rebounds, seven assists, four steals and one blocked-shot.

Centre Justin Brown put in 19 and grabbed 10 rebounds while Prior scored 16 along with five rebounds, five assists, two steals and three blocked shots.

The Bank of Queensland Redbacks’ men now have 12 wins and eight losses and are fourth in the 14-team competition.

The Redbacks’ women celebrated forward Latoya Wallace’s 200-game milestone and kept their finals hopes alive with a 72 to 42 win over the Eagles.

They are now just one-game out of the final-eight, sitting in 10th-place out of 12-teams with seven wins and 10 losses.

Forward Jess Jakens top-scored for the Redbacks with 14 along with four rebounds.

Point-guard Gabby O’Sullivan had 12 along with three rebounds and two steals while shooting guard Stephanie Sauter and point-guard Desiree Delcoure both scored 11.

The action continues this Saturday when the Bank of Queensland Redbacks play the Rockingham Flames at the Mike Barnett Recreation Centre, with the women’s game starting at 6PM and the men’s game at 8PM.
