Lightning secure top spot, Wolves celebrate Williams (Saturday Night Wrap)

The Lakeside Lightning extended their lead atop the men's SBL standings while the Wanneroo Wolves did the same on Saturday night in women's action and celebrated Suzanne Williams' 500th game in the process.

The Lakeside Lightning made a mockery of its tough schedule of two games within 18 hours against fellow finals bound teams backing up its win on the road over the East Perth Eagles with a nail biting 101-98 victory over the Perry Lakes Hawks at Lakeside Recreation Centre on Saturday afternoon.

The win sees the Lightning just about lock up top spot on the ladder with a 18-3 record to be four games clear of the Hawks and Lakeside also now remains unbeaten at home after 11 matches.

Ben Beran once again led the way for the Lightning with a massive game of 31 points, 20 rebounds and five assists against Perry Lakes. Justin Cecil also scored 22 points to go with six blocked shots while Darrel Morgan scored 17 points and Jarrad Prue pulled in 21 rebounds.

Adrian Majstrovich had 25 points and 16 boards for the Hawks with Ben Purser scoring 19 points, Corey Easley 14, Tevin Jackson 13, Michael Lay 13 and Rob Cassir 12.

The defending champion Cockburn Cougars continued their late season charge as well winning their fifth straight match beating the Goldfields Giants 85-79 at Neils Hansen Basketball Stadium.

That improves Cockburn to a 9-12 record on the season and up into 10th position in the standings to be closing in on a top-eight spot.

David Reichel had a big night for the Cougars with 33 points with Damien Scott adding 15 and Seva Chan 11. Brian Carlwell also had 10 points and 17 rebounds.

Jaycen Herring hit 26 points for the Giants with Markhuri Sanders-Frison adding 19 points, 20 rebounds, six assists and four steals. Matthew Leske also scored 14 points.

The Geraldton Buccaneers maintained its spot in third position with a 114-93 win over the bottom-placed Kalamunda Eastern Suns at Ray Owen Sports Centre.

Carter Cook finished with 28 points, nine rebounds and seven assists for the Buccaneers. Rob Kampman added 28 points and eight boards with Aaron Ralph scoring 22 points to go with 13 rebounds.

Daniel Thomas also had 14 points and four assists, and Shamus Ballantyne 10 points, nine boards and seven assists.

Luke Nevill missed Kalamunda's loss to South West on Friday but played against Geraldton on Saturday and had 27 points, 14 rebounds, nine assists and three blocked shots.

Ben Smith scored 19 points for the Suns, Kerrod Horn 15 and Louis Timms 10 to go with nine boards.

The Wanneroo Wolves improved to an 11-10 record in seventh position with a 105-95 win over the Rockingham Flames at Joondalup Basketball Stadium on Saturday.

Rob Huntington finished with 25 points and 10 rebounds for the Wolves with Trian Iliadis adding 23 points, seven boards and five assists. Damian Matacz also had 15 points and eight boards.

Cooper Land led the way for the Flames with 31 points while hitting 5-of-8 from three-point territory. Steven Bennett added 20 points, 13 assists and seven boards for Rockingham with Ryan Godfrey scoring 17 points.

The Mandurah Magic scored a crucial 89-81 win over the Willetton Tigers at Willetton Basketball Stadium to improve to a 12-8 record in fourth spot while the Tigers are struggling at 10-10 in eighth.

Taylor Mullenax led the way for the Magic with 34 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. Rhett Della Maddalena added 16 points and 12 boards with Taylor Land finishing with 11 points and 10 assists, and Andrew Bowman 11 points and six rebounds.

Quinn McDowell hit 33 points and eight rebounds for Willetton with Brandon Adams adding 20 points and 13 boards.

The Lakeside Lightning women's team made sure that their team won all four matches on the weekend when they beat the Perry Lakes Hawks on Saturday afternoon by 19 points, 69-50.

Emily Fielding hit 23 points, five rebounds and four steals for the Lightning with Courtney Bayliss adding 15 points, Krystal Stoneking 11 and Jessica Beran 10.

Gabriella Clayton did all she could for the Hawks with 30 points on the back of 4-of-8 shooting from three-point range.

The Wanneroo Wolves maintained their lead atop the women's SBL standings with a 66-48 victory over the Rockingham Flames to celebrate Suzanne Williams' 500th match in the league. She celebrated the occasion with six points on the back of two threes.

Nikita-Lee Martin top-scored for the Wolfpack with 15 points with Ainsleigh Sanders adding 11 and Casey Lockwood 12.

Samantha Whitcomb had 22 points and 15 rebounds for the Flames.

The Willetton Tigers also consolidated second spot on the table with a 61-41 win over the Mandurah Magic.

Antonia Edmondson had 19 points for the Tigers with Melissa Marsh scoring 12 points and Lisa Wallbutton 11.

Casey Mihovilovich top-scored for Mandurah with 19 points to go with 13 rebounds and five assists.
