Wolves honour Williams, Lightning fire (Week 16 Women's Wrap)

The Wanneroo Wolves maintained top sport on the women's SBL standings while celebrating Sue Williams' 500th game on Saturday with a double win on the weekend for Lakeside seeing the Lightning shoot up to fourth place.

The Week 16 women's State Basketball League action began with three matches on Friday night that saw the defending champion Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers remain in the finals hunt with a 78-60 win over the fifth-placed Kalamunda Eastern Suns.

Last year's grand finalists Rockingham Flames also won at home over the BOQ Perth Redbacks 70-60 on Friday at Mike Barnett Sports Complex.

In the last game on Friday, the Lakeside Lightning scored a 66-57 win over the one-win Toll Ipec Eagles at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre.

Saturday's action began at Lakeside Recreation Centre at midday with the Lightning making it two wins inside less than 24 hours when they downed the Perry Lakes Hawks 69-50.

The double victories improve Lakeside to a 10-7 record on the season to sit in fourth position on the standings while the Hawks slip to 8-9 in seventh with the loss.

Then on Saturday night, the Wanneroo Wolves celebrated the remarkable achievement of Williams reaching 500 SBL games by beating the Rockingham Flames 66-48 at Joondalup Basketball Stadium.

The 18-point win further secures the Wolves' hold on first place as well with a 14-4 record to be two wins clear of the Southlands Boulevarde Willetton Tigers while the Flames slip back to third at 12-6 with the defeat.

The final game of the weekend saw Willetton retake second position from Rockingham with a solid 61-41 win over the Mandurah Magic at Willetton Basketball Stadium.

There were some outstanding individual performances once again starting on Friday night with Zoe Harper leading the way for the Slammers with 13 points and 17 rebounds against the Suns.

Jennie Rintala top-scored for the Suns with 20 points and 13 rebounds.

Kaye Tucker had 19 points, 10 rebounds, five steals, three assists and two blocked shots for the Flames in their Friday win over the Redbacks.

Marita Payne had a huge game for the Redbacks with 19 points, 19 rebounds and four assists.

Nicole Jorre St Jorre had 25 points for the Eagles in their loss on Friday to the Lightning.

Emily Fielding hit 23 points, five rebounds and four steals for the Lightning on Saturday while
Gabriella Clayton did all she could for the Hawks with 30 points on the back of 4-of-8 shooting from three-point range.

Samantha Whitcomb had 22 points and 15 rebounds for the Flames in their loss on Saturday to the Lightning while Antonia Edmondson had 19 points for the Tigers against the Mandurah Magic. Casey Mihovilovich top-scored for Mandurah with 19 points to go with 13 rebounds and five assists.
