Week Sixteen SBL Players of the Week

Rockingham Flames import, Samantha Whitcomb, has continued her spectacular form in the women’s SBL, taking out her fourth Player of the Week award for the season.

Whitcomb was at it again on the weekend, putting up huge numbers for the Flames as she has done all season when they took on the Redbacks at Mike Barnett Sports Complex on Friday night. Whitcomb could not be contained, scoring 16 points to go with 10 rebounds, 6 assists and 1 block as her team went on to defeat Perth, 70-60.

The Flames faced the ladder leading Wolves in Joondalup on Saturday night where Whitcomb was again impressive, leading all scorers with 22 points including six of nine from three point range to go with 15 rebounds as Wanneroo defeated the Flames 66-48.

Whitcomb continues to lead the league in scoring (23.2pg) and steals (3.2pg) as she has done for most of the season, and is surely one of the hot favourites to take out the Most Valuable Player award in the Women’s SBL this season.

Flames fans will be eager to see if Whitcomb can continue her brilliant form in 2013 and lead the club to its first SBL championship in history.

Other considerations for the award included Zoe Harper (South West), Gabriella Clayton (Perry Lakes), Jennie Rintala (Kalamunda), Kaye Tucker (Rockingham), Marita Payne (Perth), Nicole Jorre St Jorre (East Perth), Krystal Stonekind (Lakeside), Emily Fielding (Lakeside) and Casey Mihovilovich.

The week sixteen, Men’s SBL Player of the Week has been awarded to Geraldton Buccaneers import Carter Cook.

Cook has been in scintillating form since signing with the Buccaneers in April this season and is a major reason Geraldton have snuck under the radar to be sitting third on the Men’s SBL ladder.

Cook showed his dominance on the weekend putting together some huge numbers for the Buccs in their tough double-header. On Saturday night Geraldton faced Australian Boomer, Luke Nevill and his Kalamunda Eastern Suns at Ray Owen Sports Centre where Cook accumulated 28 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists, 3 steals and didn’t record a single turn-over in 38 minutes to lead his team to a twenty-one point victory.

Backing up their huge performance on Saturday night, the Buccaneers took on the Stirling Senators at Warwick Leisure Centre the next day with Cook featuring heavily again with 26 points to go with 5 rebounds, and 3 assists as Geraldton were victorious 118-101.

Other considerations for the award included Steven Bennett (Rockingham), Aaron Ralph (Geraldton), Robert Kampman (Geraldton), Luke Nevill (Kalamunda), Cory Cooperwood (Stirling), Joshua Throns (Stirling), Markhuri Sanders-Frison (Goldfields), David Reichel (Cockburn), Jamahr Warren (South West), Benjamin Smith (Kalamunda), Quinn Mcdowell (Willetton), Taylor Mullenax (Mandurah), Benjamin Beran (Lakeside), Adrian Majstrovich (Perry Lakes) and Tom Jervis (East Perth).
