Senators knock off Tigers (Friday Night Wrap)

THE Stirling Senators scored a big upset to open Week 17 of the SBL season not only beating the Willetton Tigers but bundling them out of the top-eight in the process.

The Lakeside Lightning won its third straight men's SBL match to improve to a 19-3 record on the season to remain on top of the standings with a 99-79 win over the sixth-placed Mandurah Magic at Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre on Friday night.

Ben Beran starred again for the Lightning with 30 points and nine rebounds with Justin Cecil adding 20 points, Brad Jackson 15 and Jarrad Prue 12 to go with 21 boards.

Taylor Mullenax did all he could for the Magic with 32 points and 12 rebounds. Rhett Della Maddalena also had 12 points.

The Stirling Senators then caused the upset of the evening beating the Willetton Tigers 100-95 at Willetton Basketball Stadium.

The Senators remain in 12th spot with an 8-14 record but now the Tigers slip to 10-11 and out of the top-eight at the expense of the South West Slammers.

Cory Cooperwood was terrific for the Senators with 25 points, 16 rebounds and six assists. Jordan Wild added 21 points, 11 boards and five assists with Josh Throns scoring 18 points and Nikolas Iliadis 14 to go with eight assists.

Quinn McDowell did all he could for Willetton with 38 points and 11 rebounds while shooting 15-of-25 from the field, and 3-of-4 from long range. Brandon Adams added 23 points, Mitchell Clarke 10 and Adam Nener 10 to go with 11 assists.

The Lakeside Lightning women's team maintained fourth position on the ladder improving to an 11-7 record beating the Mandurah Magic 79-65 at Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre on Friday night.

Courtney Bayliss top-scored for the Lightning with 22 points to go with seven rebounds. Courtney Byrnes also had 21 points, five boards, five assists and four steals with Krystal Stoneking adding 11 points and Jessica Beran 10 to go with 12 rebounds.

The Willetton Tigers then thumped the Stirling Senators 77-52 in Friday's other women's clash at Willetton Basketball Stadium with the Tigers consolidating second spot in the standings up against the ninth-placed Senators.

Antonia Edmondson hit 26 points to go with five assists for the Tigers with Lisa Wallbutton adding 14 points and 12 rebounds, and Melissa Marsh 14 points.

Samantha Roscoe had 14 points for the Senators with Amber Land adding 10 points and nine rebounds.
