Week 17 'Kickz101 Perth' Newcomers of the Week

The week seventeen ‘Kickz101 Perth’, women’s Newcomer of the Week has been awarded to Courtney Byrnes of the Lakeside Lightning.

Nearing her twentieth birthday this week, Byrnes has already played over one-hundred SBL games. Byrnes was developed inside the lakeside program since eleven years-of-age, before being promoted to the WSBL team in 2009.

Byrnes was outstanding on Friday night when the Lightning made the trip down the freeway to take on the Magic at the Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre. Byrnes scored 21 points which included three crucial three pointers, to go with 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals as the Lightning defeated Mandurah 79 to 65.

The Lightning currently sit in fourth place on the Women’s SBL ladder after winning their last seven games in-a-row, and will rely on performances such as the one shown by Byrnes on the weekend, to push them deep into the finals.

The week seventeen ‘Kickz101 Perth’, men’s Newcomer of the Week has been awarded to Miles Tierney of the Silver Lake Resources Goldfields Giants.

Tierney has been used sparingly off the bench for the Giants this season, averaging 16.6 minutes per game. On Saturday night, head coach Daniel Fisher gave Tierney the opportunity to step up, allowing him 33 minutes of court time against the Slammers at Neils Hansen Basketball Stadium.

Tierney did not disappoint, putting on an outstanding shooting display to record a season high 24 points which included six of seven 2pt FG’s, two of two 3pt FG’s and six of six from the free throw line. Tierney also finished with 4 rebounds and 4 assists to put some polish on a stellar performance.

At just twenty years-of-age, Giants fans will be looking forward to seeing the development of their young home grown product, Miles Tierney, for many more years in the SBL.

Tierney and Byrnes are now in contention for the monthly award where the winner of a facebook poll receives a pair of shoes of their choice thanks to Kickz101 Perth.
