Form sides keep on winning (Week 18 Women's Wrap)

THE Willetton Tigers, Lakeside Lightning and South West Slammers all continued their hot run of winning form in the women's SBL in Week 18 with top side Wanneroo sitting out with a bye.

The weekend's action began with three matches on Friday night with the Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers beating the Perry Lakes Hawks 84-68, the Lakeside Lightning downing the Kalamunda Eastern Suns 77-59 and the Mandurah Magic holding on against the Toll Ipec Eagles 48-41.

The Slammers continued their strong run of form on Friday beating the Hawks 84-68 at Eaton Recreation Centre to win a third straight match while it was the Hawks fourth consecutive defeat as they slipped down to eighth position in the standings with a 9-10 record.

The Lakeside Lightning also continued their charge up the SBL table with an eighth straight victory downing the sliding Kalamunda Eastern Suns at Lakeside Recreation Centre.

The Lightning have now improved to 12-7 in fourth spot while the Suns have lost six straight to slip to 10-10 in sixth.

The competition's bottom two teams then played out the final game on Friday with the Magic beating the Eagles by seven points at Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre.

Friday's star individual performers included Lauren Jeffers hitting 24 points, Kimberly Sitzmann 21, Bianca Donovan 14 and Dannielle Smith 12 for the Slammers. Gabriella Clayton scored 21 points for the Hawks.

Courtney Byrnes led the way for the Lightning with 19 points, 13 rebounds, four assists and four steals while Jennie Rintala had 24 points, seven boards, five steals and three blocks for the Suns.

Briana Klasztorny led the way for the Magic with 20 points and 12 rebounds and Nicole Jorre St Jorre finished with 16 points, four rebounds, four steals and three assists for the Eagles.

Then on Saturday night, the South West Slammers beat the BOQ Perth Redbacks 65-58, the Rockingham Flames downed the Mandurah Magic 73-49, the Willetton Tigers prevailed over the East Perth Eagles 59-45 and the Stirling Senators knocked off the Cockburn Cougars 85-77.

The Slammers backed up their win on Friday with a good performance to down the 10th-placed Redbacks on Saturday at Belmont Oasis with that victory further improving South West to a 10-9 record with four straight wins to be in fifth position on the table.

Last year's grand finalists Rockingham were too good for Mandurah winning by 24 points at Mike Barnett Sports Complex with the Magic unable to back up Friday's win over the Eagles.

It was the Flames' third win in the last four games as they improve to a 14-6 record in third position.

The second-placed Willetton maintained its position on the table with a 15-5 record beating the bottom-placed East Perth by 14 points at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre on Saturday.

The Senators then beat the Cockburn by eight points at Warwick Leisure Centre to improve to a 9-11 record in ninth spot while Cockburn is 10-10 and hanging on in seventh.

The standout individual performers on Saturday included Kimberly Sitzmann finishing with 18 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals for the Slammers. Gabby O'Sullivan hit 21 points for the Redbacks with Marita Payne adding 13 points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots.

Samantha Whitcomb led the way for the Flames with 24 points, nine rebounds and six assists with Kaye Tucker adding 17 points, eight boards, five assists, three blocks and two steals. Casey Mihovilovich had 12 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and five steals for the Magic.

Lara Napier top-scored for Willetton with 16 points and Melissa Marsh adding 13 to go with 10 rebounds and six assists. Danielle Lipscombe led the way for East Perth with 14 points and Nicole Jorre St Jorre added 10 points, six rebounds and five steals.

Stephanie Jones worked hard for Cockburn with 19 points and 14 rebounds with Emma Pass scoring 15 points, Kate Fielding 13 and Taryn Priestly 11.
