Magic and Eagles penalised for on-court melee

The State Basketball League has reviewed an incident which occurred during the final quarter of the Men’s SBL game between the Mandurah Magic and East Perth Eagles last Friday night, July 12, where an on-court melee took place involving both teams.

The SBL Commission found both clubs guilty of their involvement in the melee and were fined $1000 each, with $500 being suspended until the end of the 2013 SBL season.

East Perth Eagles player Joe-Alan Tupaea was fined $100 for kicking the ball, which unintentionally struck a scoretable official. In addition to the fine, Tupaea will serve a one-game suspended sentence which will continue until the end of the 2013 SBL season (including finals) for his involvement in the on-court melee.

Mandurah Magic’s Taylor Land will serve a two-game suspended sentence for his involvement in the incident and teammate Andrew Bowman will also serve a two-game suspended sentence as it was deemed he was, ‘third-man-in’, which caused the melee to escalate.

“The SBL Commission takes these types of incidents very seriously, there is no room for this sort of behaviour in the SBL” said Competitions Manager, Adam Bowler.

“We have worked hard to build a family friendly product and we will continue to work hard on ensuring the image of the SBL is a positive one.”

Land, Bowman and Tupaea are all permitted to play for their respective clubs this weekend, with the suspended penalty carrying over until the end of the finals.
