Flames, Wolves make statements (Friday Night Wrap)

THE Rockingham Flames got a measure of revenge for last year's women's SBL grand final on Friday night while the Wanneroo Wolves continued their charge in men's action with a win over Perry Lakes.

The Mandurah Magic returned to some impressive men's SBL form on Friday with a 106-84 win over the Perth Redbacks.

The win improves the Magic to a 14-11 record to remain in seventh position while the Redbacks slip to 14-10 in fifth.

Rhett Della Maddalena hit 30 points and pulled in 19 rebounds while dishing out five assists for the Magic with Taylor Land adding 18 points and nine rebounds, Taylor Mullenax 18 points and 11 rebounds, and Thomas Remmerswaal 16 points.

Bennie Lewis hit 21 points for the Redbacks with Michael Vigor also adding 21 to go with nine rebounds. Jarrad Prior scored 12 points and Joel Wagner 10 to go with his eight assists.

The eighth-placed South West Slammers hammered the 11th-ranked Rockingham Flames 105-64 at Mike Barnett Sports Complex.

Jamahr Warren had 24 points and nine rebounds for the Slammers with Clive Weeden scoring 22 points and Ty Harrelson had 19 points, 11 assists and eight boards. Wade Hitchcock also scored 15 points.

Cooper Land scored 16 points to go with 12 rebounds for the Flames. Trent Gerovich added 15 points and six boards.

The Wanneroo Wolves then continued their resurgence with a fifth-straight victory to knock off the second-placed Perry Lakes Hawks and leave the Hawks on shaky ground in their position.

The Wolves also hammered the Geraldton Buccaneers last weekend and on Friday night at the WA Basketball Centre, Trian Iliadis had 23 points, Rob Huntington 22, Damian Matacz 14 and Reece Maxwell 14.

Ben Purser scored 20 points for the Hawks with Michael Lay adding 20, Rob Cassir 17 and Corey Easley 15 to go with 13 rebounds.

The Lakeside Lightning maintained top spot on the standings with a 97-80 victory over the Stirling Senators at Warwick Leisure Centre.

Ben Beran led the way for the Lightning with 26 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Darrel Morgan added 16 points, Chris Sofoulis 16 and Jarrad Prue 19 rebounds.

Cory Cooperwood had 20 points, nine rebounds and eight assists for the Senators with Jordan Wild adding 17 points to go with 19 boards. Josh Throns added 16 points, Thomas Witts 10 and Nikolas Iliadis 10.

The Perth Redbacks women's team beat the Mandurah Magic at Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre on Friday night with Gabby O'Sullivan finishing with 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Redbacks.

Marita Payne also had 15 points, 17 boards and five assists while Tarsha Fletcher added 13 points and seven rebounds.

Casey Mihovilovich had 17 points, five rebounds and five assists for the Magic with Gemma Thomas scoring 15 points as well.

The Rockingham Flames prevailed in the battle of last year's grand finalists knocking off the defending champion South West Slammers 76-73 at Mike Barnett Sports Complex.

The win is the Flames' third straight on the season and improves them to a 15-6 record in third position while the Slammers slip to 10-10 in fifth.

Kaye Tucker finishing with 23 points, five rebounds and four assists for Rockingham with Jacinta Bourne adding 21 points and 10 boards. Samantha Whitcomb also had 17 points and seven rebounds.

Kimberly Sitzmann had 19 points and five boards for the Slammers with Lauren Jeffers adding 16 points, Zoe Harper 12 and Kara Hargreaves 10.

The top-of-the-table Wanneroo Wolves beat the Perry Lakes Hawks 58-48 at the WA Basketball Centre to knock the Hawks out of the top-eight.

Wanneroo won its sixth straight match to improve to a 16-4 record with Nikita-Lee Martin scoring 17 points while Casey Lockwood added 10 points and nine rebounds, and Ainsleigh Sanders nine points and 10 boards.

Gabriella Clayton finished with 18 points for the Hawks with Sarah Donovan working hard to pick up 16 rebounds.

The Stirling Senators moved up into eighth position with an upset 73-67 win over the Lakeside Lightning at Warwick Leisure Centre.

Amber Land hit 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Senators with Lyndal Gardner scoring 13 points and Taylor Lilley 11.

Lakeside had won eight straight matches coming into the game but slip to a 12-8 record with Jessica Beran scoring 16 points, Krystal Stoneking 12 and Jessica van Schie 11.
