Hawks second, Redbacks eighth (Friday Night Wrap)
THE final Friday night of the SBL regular season for 2013 was highlighted in men's action by the Perry Lakes Hawks returning to second position with a come from behind win over the Perth Redbacks who slipped down to eighth as a result.
The Perry Lakes Hawks returned to second position on the men's SBL ladder with a 104-97 win over the BOQ Perth Redbacks on Friday at the WA Basketball Centre.
The win sees the Hawks replace the Sun City Plumbing Geraldton Buccaneers in second place in the standings while the loss has the Redbacks falling down to eighth spot and that's where they will stay with their regular season now at a close.
The Hawks stormed home to win by seven points after trailing by eight at three quarter-time with Ben Purser leading the way with 34 points and seven assists.
Adrian Majstrovich added 20 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists for Perry Lakes with Corey Easley also finishing with 18 points and 12 boards, and Michael Lay 17 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
Justin Brown did all he could for the Redbacks finishing with 27 points and nine rebounds with Bennie Lewis adding 23 points, nine boards and six assists, and Jarrad Prior 20 points.
The People's Choice Eagles ended their regular season with a 114-108 win over the bottom-placed Kalamunda Eastern Suns at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre.
The win sees East Perth end up on a 15-11 record and they currently sit in fifth position in the standings and will likely stay there even with Mandurah and South West a chance to join them on 15 wins.
Tom Jervis had a big night for the Eagles with 36 points, 21 rebounds and 13 assists with Drew Williamson adding 28 points and seven assists. Michael Jones also had 19 points and 15 rebounds, and Joe-Alan Tupaea 15 points and Sunday Dech 10 to go with 10 boards.
Luke Nevill had another 37 points, 14 rebounds and eight assists for the Suns with Ben Smith adding 33 points, Joel Questel 15 and Louis Timms 13.
Meanwhile, in women's action on Friday the Kalamunda Eastern Suns returned to the winner's list ahead of the finals with a 55-48 win over the Toll Ipec Eagles at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre.
The result sees the Suns now enter their final match of the regular season on Saturday night up against the 11th-placed Mandurah Magic while the Eagles' season is over after 18 consecutive losses and a 1-21 record.
The BOQ Perth Redbacks finished their season on a winning note beating the Perry Lakes Hawks 51-49 at the WA Basketball Centre.
The win sees the Redbacks finish their season with a 10-12 record and they currently sit in ninth position but could still slip to 10th if the Hawks bounce back and beat the Cockburn Cougars on Saturday.
Marita Payne led the way for the Redbacks with 18 points, 14 rebounds, seven blocked shots and four assists in an outstanding all-round performance. Gabriella Clayton finished with 13 points, eight rebounds and seven assists for the Hawks.
