Quarter finals all decided (Saturday Week 2 Wrap)

THE women's and men's quarter-final winners in the SBL for 2013 have all been decided after Saturday night's action that saw both Wanneroo's sides advance as did the Perry Lakes' men.

There were two men's quarter-final series left to be determined on Saturday night after the Lakeside Lightning secured a 2-0 win over the BOQ Perth Redbacks on Friday as did the People's Choice Eagles over the Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers.

The Perry Lakes Hawks had finished the regular season in second position in the standings but had a tough fight up against the Mandurah Magic to advance to the semi finals.

The Magic won Game 1 last Saturday at Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre before the Hawks bounced back to level the series with a 96-88 win on Friday at the WA Basketball Centre.

Game 3 was also at the WA Basketball Centre on Saturday with Perry Lakes prevailing over Mandurah in a tight contest 84-74.

Adrian Majstrovich was outstanding for the Hawks finishing with 27 points and 10 rebounds with Michael Lay contributing 18 points, seven boards and four assists. Corey Easley added 12 points for Perry Lakes and Ben Purser 11 to go with 10 rebounds and four assists.

Taylor Mullenax did all he possibly could for the Magic finishing off his massive season with 30 points, 13 rebounds and five blocked shots. Rhett Della Maddalena also had 17 points and eight boards for the Magic with Andrew Bowman adding nine points.

Saturday night was just Game 2 of the Sun City Plumbing Geraldton Buccaneers-Australian Belt Scrapers Wanneroo Wolves quarter-final series and the second-seeded Buccaneers had to win to force a deciding Game 3 against the seventh-ranked Wolves.

Wanneroo scored an impressive 96-81 victory last Saturday at Joondalup Basketball Stadium before the series moved to the Active West Stadium, but the result didn’t change with the Wolves securing a 2-0 series win with a 93-81 victory on the back of a 33-21 final period.

Seb Salinas had a big night out for the Wolfpack finishing with 26 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists to only narrowly miss out on a triple-double.

Trian Iliadis also scored 26 points to go with six rebounds and three steals for Wanneroo with Reece Maxwell scoring 12 points and Damian Matacz 11 to go with 14 rebounds. Brad Robbins dished out five assists.

Carter Cook scored 23 points to go with 11 rebounds for Geraldton with Daniel Thomas scoring 22 points and Rob Kampman 14. Matt Wundenberg had eight points and 11 boards, and Aaron Ralph eight points and seven rebounds.

Meanwhile, there was just one quarter-final women's series left to be decided on Saturday night after on Friday the Kalamunda Eastern Suns, Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers and Rockingham Flames secured 2-0 wins in their battles against the Lakeside Lightning, Willetton Tigers and Cockburn Cougars respectively.

The Wanneroo Wolves had been on top of the standings in the women's competition for much of the regular season before dropping down to third position heading into the finals setting up a quarter-final series with No. 6 seeds the Stirling Senators.

The Wolves scored a thumping win last Saturday 84-59 at Warwick Leisure Centre, but the Senators put up a much tougher contest this Saturday at Joondalup Basketball Stadium before the Wolfpack prevailed 75-68 to secure a 2-0 series win and to advance to the semi finals.

Nikita-Lee Martin led the way for the Wolves with 21 points and six rebounds with Casey Lockwood adding 16 points and 10 rebounds. Chelsea Burns had a strong all-round game with 13 points, seven steals and four assists with Ainsleigh Sanders adding nine points and nine boards as well.
