Giants Sign Kiwi Recruit

2nd February 2014 - Goldfields Giants Media

The Silver Lake Resources Goldfields Giants have bolstered their playing stocks for the upcoming 2014 season after recently agreeing to terms with New Zealand recruit Travis McIlroy.

McIlroy has taken advantage of a recent ruling by Basketball Australia to relax the restrictions on players of New Zealand and Pacific Island nationality, which allows them to play in Australian leagues without taking up an imported player position.

This sees the 193cm (6'4") guard/forward from Waipiro Bay on New Zealand's North Island being able to compete in Australian league for the first time and he was drawn to the Giants due to a strong family presence in the Goldfields region.

The 30 year old arrived in Kalgoorlie-Boulder this week and is keen to bring to the Giants a wealth of experience from his playing days in New Zealand as well as stints overseas.

This includes numerous seasons in the New Zealand National Basketball League with the Canterbury Rams, Waikato Pistons, Auckland Stars and most recently the Northland Suns.

Internationally he's represented New Zealand at international youth tournaments and had a season competing in the Philippines for the Alaska Aces.

He's also attracted the eyes of Australian National Basketball League scouts with a tryout for the Townsville Crocodiles as well as being in the practice squad for the New Zealand Breakers.

With a background in coaching and player development, his knowledge of the game is certain to be an asset to the Giants in their 2014 State Basketball League campaign.
