Coaches look ahead to Week 2 of the SBL

SOME SBL men's and women's coaches shared their thoughts about their upcoming matches this weekend in Week 2 of the 2014 season.

WOMEN'S
SCHWEIGEN EAST PERTH EAGLES
Coach – Conrad Francis

Given the resounding win the Senators had against the Redbacks in Round 1 we are expecting a very tough game ahead of us. In saying that with the welcomed additions of Burton, Cooke and Gunkelmen we will be adding a lot of height and experience to our team.

I would expect us to control the tempo better through our defensive pressure and look to transfer this into a much more efficient offense this weekend.

Emily Burton is fresh from a few years break and being the sister of West Coast Waves and Opals centre Natalie Burton, she is keen to re-establish herself in this league and given the way she has trained and played in the Blitz I am sure we will see some exciting minutes from her.

We will need to keep Stirling’s big three of Walker, Land and Wild in check and a close eye on E. Berryman and youngster Throns if we are going to be competitive in this game.

KALAMUNDA EASTERN SUNS
Coach – Craig Mansfield

Slammers have been a quality team over the last couple of seasons, we respect their program hugely and are expecting another tough hit out. Our aim over the first month of the season is to show improvement every week.

A couple of injuries in our group gives some players an opportunity to nail down a more prominent role in our team and it's exciting for the coaches and club to see them improve and get an opportunity. We are working hard and expecting a far more polished performance than in round one.

MEN'S
MANDURAH MAGIC
Coach – Jason Chalk

After a tough week we managed to pull out a win against the Hawks, however we have quickly moved on from that to focus on a very tough Flames outfit. After us having a lot of changes to key personnel we are better for the run last week. However in saying that the Flames who have also had key signings would have had three games to gel together by the time we play each other on Sunday.

It will be a great game to watch as both us and the Flames are aiming to take big steps upwards in 2014. It should be a high scoring affair on the Sunday with both us and the Flames possessing many scoring threats. We will aim to reduce the impact of Cooper Land and Tommy Remmerswaal on the scoreboard and to look to control the tempo of the game.

PERRY LAKES HAWKS
Coach – Charles Nix

We always knew the start to the season was going to be tough and now we have a new and exciting Perth team at their place. After the weekends result there is no need to panic at this point but it just makes it that much more important to get the result Friday.

Stan Okoye looks an excitement machine so we'll have to watch him closely and I've always been a fan of Wagner and Prior. We'll make the appropriate adjustments this week and come out to play Friday, I know our boys are seething at letting it slip on the weekend.

ROCKINGHAM FLAMES
Coach – Mark Utley

The Tigers are unpredictable and we must stop their shooters from shooting a high percentage for us to win. All our team is healthy and there is real competition for positions in our playing team.

We are looking to get Ryan Godfrey, Beau Samuelson and maybe Chudier Pal back making the team really deep.

Sunday we are expecting a good solid game against a really solid, talented team. There will be a lot of underlying stories but we will just be trying to improve our win loss record.

COLLIE CRANE HIRE SOUTH WEST SLAMMERS
Coach – Ty Harrelson

This Saturday we get another home game against the Suns. We had a great training session last night and the team is looking forward to getting back on the court. We are hoping to build off of our fifth place finish last season and start 2-0.
