Flames start 2014 on fire (Week 2 Women's SBL Wrap)

THE Rockingham Flames women's SBL team had a remarkable weekend recording two wins by a combined 57 points over two talented opponents to remain unbeaten to start the 2014 season.

Week 2 women's SBL action began with two matches on Friday night that saw the Perry Lakes Hawks get their first win of 2014 beating the Perth Redbacks 71-53 and then the Flames thrashed the Willetton Tigers 94-60.

There were then three more matches on Saturday night with the South West Slammers opening their season beating the Kalamunda Eastern Suns 64-50 while the Schweigen East Perth Eagles defeated the Stirling Senators 67-62 and the Cockburn Cougars downed the Willetton Tigers 75-63.

Then in Sunday afternoon's only match up at the Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre with the Flames topping off their weekend with a 77-53 victory over the Mandurah Magic.

The Week 2 results end with the Flames sitting atop the women's SBL standings with three straight victories to open the new season by a combined 102 points.

Coming off making the grand final in 2012 and then the semi finals in 2013, the Flames look desperate to really fight for the 2014 women's SBL championship.

The Cockburn Cougars also remain unbeaten with two victories while the Lakeside Lightning have won their one and only contest so far of 2014 as have the South West Slammers and Wanneroo Wolves.

The Stirling Senators, Perry Lakes Hawks, Mandurah Magic and East Perth Eagles have all gone 1-1 over the first two weeks with the Kalamunda Eastern Suns winless from two games, and the Willetton Tigers and Perth Redbacks both winless from three matches.

The weekend's action was again highlighted by some outstanding individual form.

Kate Anthony led the way for Perry Lakes finishing with 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists while hitting 2-of-3 from three-point range.

Samantha Whitcomb top-scored for the Flames on Friday with 18 points and four rebounds while Jacinta Bourne added 15 points, Talisia Bourne 14 (six assists, four rebounds), Kaye Tucker 12 (eight rebounds, four assists), Holly Coomey 11 and Darcee Garbin 10 (eight boards, three assists).

Ebony Antonio did all she could for Willetton finishing the night with 22 points and 11 rebounds on the back of shooting 9-of-13 from the field and 2-of-3 from downtown.

Then on Saturday night, Sam Richards top-scored for Cockburn with 16 points while Marita Payne added 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Antonia Edmondson tried hard for Willetton with 19 points and seven rebounds with Lisa Wallbutton contributing 14 points and 10 boards.

Dannielle Devenny top-scored for East Perth with 16 points and eight rebounds with Emily Burton adding 13 points and eight boards.

Taylor Wild top-scored for the Senators with 14 points, five rebounds and three assists with Lyndal Gardner adding 13 points and Amber Land 12 to go with 14 rebounds.

Bianca Donovan was the star of the night for the Slammers with 27 points and seven rebounds but Amy Patton wasn’t far behind contributing 21 points, 17 rebounds and five assists. The pair combined for 48 of South West's 64 points on the night.

The Suns are now winless this season coming off last year's grand final appearance with Jessie Edwards top-scoring on Saturday night with 15 points while Jennie Rintala finished with 11 points and 17 rebounds.
