Slammers, Lightning, Wolves win again (Week 2 Men's SBL Wrap)

THERE remains three unbeaten and three winless teams in the men's SBL after the first two weeks of the 2014 season while the Rockingham Flames recorded a win both on Friday night and Sunday afternoon.

There were two men's SBL matches on Friday night to kick off the Week 2 action with the Perth Redbacks beating the Perry Lakes Hawks 108-90 and the Rockingham Flames opening their weekend with a 101-97 victory over the Willetton Tigers.

It was then a massive Saturday night with five matches taking place starting with the Wanneroo Wolves beating the Sun City Plumbing Geraldton Buccaneers 99-91.

The Lakeside Lightning also hit the road to beat the Silver Lake Resources Goldfields Giants 112-97 while the Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers stayed at home and defeated the Kalamunda Eastern Suns 95-87.

The Vorian Agency East Perth Eagles downed the Stirling Senators 110-99 and in the final game of Saturday night in men's SBL action, the Willetton Tigers got their first win of 2014 downing the Cockburn Cougars 101-89.

There was then just the one match on Sunday afternoon and it was Rockingham recording its second win of the weekend downing the Mandurah Magic 110-98 at the Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre.

Following the first two weeks of the 2014 season, the Slammers, Lightning and Wolves all sit unbeaten atop the table with two wins from two matches.

The Flames improved to fourth position and to a 3-1 record on the season with their two wins on the weekend while the Eagles and Redbacks both hold 2-1 records.

The Cougars, Magic and Senators are all 1-1 after two weeks while the Buccaneers and Tigers are 1-2.

There remains three winless teams with the Hawks losing their opening two games, and the Suns and Giants their first three of season 2014 in the men's competition.

Once again the weekend was highlighted by starring individual showings as well.

On Friday night, Dennis Tawhiti starred for the Redbacks finishing with 27 points and 13 rebounds while shooting 11-of-16 from the field.

Jarrad Prior also finished with 21 points and eight rebounds for Perth with Jarrad Jackson contributing 19 points, six boards and three assists.

Ben Purser top-scored for Perry Lakes with 26 points and 10 assists with Corey Easley contributing 18 points and seven rebounds, and Rob Cassir 15 points, four rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocked shots.

Cooper Land led the way for the Flames with 26 points, 13 rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots while Tom Remmerswaal added 20 points and 11 rebounds.

John Dickson again did all he could for Willetton and ended the night with 28 points and 16 rebounds while shooting 9-of-15 from the floor and 3-of-5 from three-point range.

Then on Saturday night, Brad Tinsley starred for the Lightning with 32 points and eight rebounds on the back of shooting 11-of-19 from the floor. Caleb Palkert was also terrific with 29 points and 11 rebounds shooting 13-of-23 from the field as well.

Tommy Hannon finished with 29 points and eight rebounds for the Giants with Lordan Franich adding 26 points, nine rebounds, six assists, two steals and two blocks on the back of shooting 11-of-19 from the field.

The Eagles beat the Senators by 11 points at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre with Austin Kisselev top-scoring for East Perth with 23 points and seven rebounds.

Cory Cooperwood top-scored for the Senators with 29 points, 10 rebounds, six assists, three steals and two blocks with Jordan Wild adding 25 points and 10 boards while shooting 11-of-17 from the field.

Slammers' playing-coach Ty Harrelson was terrific with 27 points, 12 assists, five steals and four rebounds with Clive Weeden adding 27 points and 10 rebounds, and Jonathan Todd Hendley 18 points, and 10 boards.

Ben Smith finished with 19 points and eight assists for Kalamunda with Louis Timms adding 19 points and 12 rebounds.

Willetton scored a 12-point win over Cockburn at Willetton Basketball Stadium with John Dickson again leading the way for the Tigers with 31 points and 11 rebounds.

Damien Scott led the way for the Cougars with 28 points and eight rebounds with Seva Chan adding 22 points and five assists, and Gavin Field 18 points and 12 boards.
