Lightning suffer first loss, Flames on top (Week 5 Men's SBL Wrap)

THE Lakeside Lightning suffered their first loss of 2014 at the hands of Perry Lakes but bounced back on Sunday with the Rockingham Flames now sitting atop of the men's SBL standings with another strong showing.

It was a huge weekend of action in the men's SBL with eight games across the three days with the Perth Redbacks, Rockingham Flames, Sun City Plumbing Geraldton Buccaneers, Silver Lake Resources Goldfields Giants, Perry Lakes Hawks, Mandurah Magic, Joondalup Wolves and Lakeside Lightning all recording one win apiece.

The round began on Friday night with the Perth Redbacks beating the Vorian Agency East Perth Eagles 106-88 at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre.

The Rockingham Flames also recorded a thrilling 93-91 win over the Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers at Mike Barnett Sports Complex.

Then on Saturday night, the Geraldton Buccaneers beat the Cockburn Cougars 116-80 at Active West Stadium and the Silver Lake Resources Goldfields Giants defeated the Willetton Tigers 110-100 at Neils Hansen Basketball Stadium.

The Perry Lakes Hawks knocked off the defending champion Lakeside Lightning 111-105 at WA Basketball Centre, the Mandurah Magic beat the Stirling Senators 107-101 at Warwick Leisure Centre and the Joondalup Wolves beat the Kalamunda Eastern Suns 115-75 at Ray Owen Sports Centre.

The round then wrapped up on Sunday afternoon at Lakeside Recreation Centre with the Lightning bouncing back from their first defeated of the 2014 season with a 112-89 win over the Kalamunda Eastern Suns.

The round's results leave the Rockingham Flames atop of the men's SBL standings with a 6-1 record followed by the Lakeside Lightning (5-1), Joondalup Wolves (4-1), Geraldton Buccaneers (5-2), Mandurah Magic (4-2), Perth Redbacks (4-3), Perry Lakes Hawks (3-3) and South West Slammers (2-3).

Just outside the eight are the Stirling Senators (2-3), East Perth Eagles (3-5), Goldfields Giants (2-5), Cockburn Cougars (1-5) and Willetton Tigers (1-5).

On Friday night, Stan Okoye was the star for the Redbacks finishing with 34 points, 14 rebounds, four steals and two blocked shots on the back of shooting 11-of-20 from the field and a perfect 12-of-12 from the line.

Nathan Friend top-scored for the Eagles with 22 points with Kyle Armour scoring 18 to go with nine assists and six rebounds coming off his two 43-point matches last weekend.

Cooper Land was the star for Rockingham with 30 points and 13 rebounds with Tom Remmerswaal adding 21 points and eight rebounds, and Taylor Land 20 points and 11 assists.

Clive Weeden top-scored for the Slammers with 20 points on 9-of-16 shooting with Ty Harrelson adding 19 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and three steals.

On Saturday night, Bennie Lewis finished with 32 points and seven rebounds on 12-of-23 shooting for the Buccaneers with Odartey Blankson adding 31 points and 10 boards shooting 10-of-16 from the floor and 9-of-10 from the foul line.

Carter Cook also contributed 23 points, eight rebounds and five assists for Geraldton.

Damien Scott had 19 points for the Cougars but shot just 2-of-12 from downtown with Anthony Borden adding 14 points, Gavin Field 12 and Seva Chan 11.

Tommy Hannon was the star for the Giants with 33 points and a massive 19 rebounds on the back of shooting 13-of-22 from the floor.

Quinn McDowell scored 35 points to go with 13 rebounds for the Tigers and fellow import John Dickson added 30 points, 10 boards and six steals, but it wasn’t quite enough.

Justin Cecil showed what a valuable addition to the Hawks he will be with 35 points and seven rebounds with Corey Easley adding 22 points, Rob Cassir 17 and Ben Purser 16 to go with 12 rebounds and five assists.

Brad Tinsley finished with 23 points, six rebounds and six assists for the Lightning with Jarrad Prue again on fire with 20 points and 21 rebounds shooting 10-of-11 from the floor.

Paul Hafford top-scored for the Magic with 29 points and 11 rebounds with Ben Smith adding 27 points and 14 boards, and Taylor Mullenax 27 and 16.

Josh Throns top-scored for Stirling finishing with 27 points and nine rebounds with Austin Bruton scoring 23 points and Cody Ellis adding 17 points, 15 rebounds, five assists and two blocked shots.

Trian Iliadis led the way for the Wolves with 27 points, seven assists and six rebounds while Rob Huntington contributed 23 points and 11 rebounds, Brendan Tucek 16 points and Seb Salinas 15 to go with 15 rebounds and seven assists.

Adhar Mayen led the way for the Eastern Suns with 22 points and six rebounds while Ben Smith had 20 points and Louis Timms 10.

And on Sunday, Brad Tinsley hit 24 points and dished out nine assists for the Lightning while Jarrad Prue was incredible once again with 21 points and 29 rebounds.

Louis Timms did all he could for the Eastern Suns fresh off hitting the floor for the Perth Wildcats in their NBL championship victory. He had 36 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots for the Suns.
