Ellis gets first victory with Senators (Week 6 Thursday night SBL wrap)

CODY Ellis tasted victory for the first time since joining the Stirling Senators on Thursday night while Perry Lakes got a fourth straight men's win and both the Rockingham teams won to remain on top of the SBL.

There were three women's SBL matches on Thursday night with the Rockingham Flames beating the Cockburn Cougars 83-55, the Perry Lakes Hawks beating the Schweigen East Perth Eagles 84-63 and the Joondalup Wolves winning a thriller 64-61 over the Stirling Senators.

The Flames' 28-point win over the Cougars at Mike Barnett Sports Complex continues their unbeaten start to the season with their winning run now stretching to six straight matches while Cockburn suffered just their second loss of the season in their fifth match.

Samantha Whitcomb was the star for the Flames finishing with 26 points, seven rebounds and four assists with Kaye Tucker adding 16 points, six boards and five assists.

Darcee Garbin also contributed 13 points and seven boards with Holly Coomey finishing with 10 touches and six rebounds.

Emma Pass worked hard for Cockburn finishing with 16 points and seven rebounds with Marita Payne adding 15 points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots.

The Hawks beat the Eagles by 21 points at the WA Basketball Centre to improve to a 3-3 record while East Perth slipped to 2-5.

Kate Anthony was the star for Perry Lakes finishing with 24 points, seven assists and six rebounds with Sarah Donovan 17 points and 11 boards, and Anna Kovats 17 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, four steals and a block.

Nicole Jorre St Jorre did all she could for East Perth with 24 points, five rebounds, five steals and three assists with Stephanie Jones adding 10 points and four boards for the Eagles.

The defending champion Wolves held on in a three-point thriller over the Senators at the Joondalup Basketball Stadium with Joondalup now improving to a 3-2 record with Stirling on 2-3.

Nikita-Lee Martin was the star for Joondalup with 23 points, four rebounds and four assists with Ellyce Ironmonger adding 10 points and 17 boards.

Taylor Wild led the way for the Senators with 15 points and seven rebounds with Amber Land adding 11 points and 10 boards, and Tegan Walker 10 points.

There were also three matches in the men's competition on Thursday night with the Rockingham Flames beating the Cockburn Cougars 102-85 with the Perry Lakes Hawks defeating the Vorian Agency East Perth Eagles 90-80 and the Stirling Senators downing the Joondalup Wolves 103-96.

The Flames maintained top spot on the men's SBL ladder as well as the women's with their 17-point victory over the Cougars at home.

Rockingham has now won seven straight matches since losing its first game of the season while Cockburn continues to struggle now having lost six straight since winning the opening game of its campaign.

Cooper Land starred for the Flames finishing with 27 points and 14 rebounds with Tom Remmerswaal contributing 22 points, five boards and four blocked shots.

Taylor Land also added 19 points and eight assists for Rockingham.

Damien Scott top-scored for the Cougars with 21 points and nine rebounds with Gavin Field adding 18 points and eight boards.

Steven Van Lit also had 12 points and Anthony Borden 10 for Cockburn.

Perry Lakes beat East Perth at home by 10 points with the Hawks now having won four straight matches after losing the opening three of season while the Eagles slip to a 3-6 record.

Ben Purser led the way for the Hawks with 26 points, 12 rebounds and six rebounds with Justin Cecil adding 22 points, Corey Easley 13 and Rob Cassir 13.

Austin Kisselev scored 17 points to go with nine rebounds and six blocked shots for the Eagles with Kyle Armour adding 17 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

Nikola Donlagic also finished with 15 points.

The Senators beat the Wolves at Joondalup to get their third win of the season and first since the arrival of Cody Ellis while the Wolfpack slip to a 4-2 record with the defeat.

Cory Cooperwood top-scored for Stirling with 22 points and 10 rebounds with Jordan Wild adding 18 points, Cody Ellis 17 (15 rebounds, four blocks), Josh Throns 12, Austin Bruton 12 and Nikolas Iliadis 10.

Seb Salinas was an unstoppable force for the Wolves finishing with 39 points and seven rebounds on the back of shooting 14-of-25 from the field and 4-of-8 from downtown.

Trian Iliadis added 22 points for Joondalup, Sean Easther 13 points and seven rebounds, and Rob Huntington 11 points and five boards.
