Coaches look ahead to Week 7 of the SBL

SOME SBL men's and women's coaches shared their thoughts about their upcoming matches this weekend in Week 7 of the 2014 season.

JOONDALUP WOLVES
Coach – Vlad Alava

It was good to get the two games over the Easter break. Stirling did a great job in making it a very close contest in the end and we really need to do a better job consolidating margins in our favour in games. However, in saying that the Senators did a fair job in hauling in a significant margin and pushing us right to the end.

Perth Redbacks was always going to be a tough match up especially being an Easter Monday contest. I thought that it was one that showed professionalism from our girls to get in and get out with the win. Sometimes it’s not necessarily going to happen pretty but you still need to make sure you come up with the victory. Credit where it's due, Coach Budd’s work with this group is starting to show some real returns and there were some good signs for his group. I thought they were much more disciplined in their approach and genuinely made us earn that victory right through to the end.

This weekend, we take on East Perth. This will be a tough match up for us on Sunday with East Perth being much improved with their basketball this year. We need to take steps towards improving our play for the full 40 minutes and we expect this one to be a real test as they have some players that we will need to be aware of and limit in their production.

We've got to take care of the Slammers on Thursday first, hopefully we get a win there so Sunday against Lakeside has the last two remaining undefeated teams in the league.

Lakeside sits second with a 6-0 record and have a winning margin of nearly 25 points a game, just below our average winning margin of 26.4. Like us they love to shoot the three ball, hoisting 27 a game, compared to our 24. This should be an offensive shootout, and an entertaining game to watch.

It was good to get the two wins over Easter. We have a lot of improvement to do but we are happy that we have won games early. It was a very good triple double by a Taylor Land.

Now this week, we have two difficult games against a Slammers team that their ladder position doesn't represent their talent and the defending champs Lakeside at home on the Sunday. We will try and work on what both teams do at training in the lead up to the ANZAC Day weekend of fixtures.
