Cougars men snap losing run (Week 7 Thursday night SBL wrap)

THE Cockburn Cougars' men snapped a six-game losing run in SBL Thursday night action while their women also won while both Rockingham Flames teams maintained their spots on top of the competitions.

The women's matches on Thursday night saw the Cockburn Cougars beat the Schweigen East Perth Eagles 75-60 at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre and the Orange Autos Rockingham Flames defeated the Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers 101-74 at Eaton Recreation Centre.

Cockburn's 15-point win over East Perth improves the Cougars to a 4-2 record on the season while the Eagles slip to 2-6, but it's still already an improvement on 2014.

Sam Richards was the star of the night for the Cougars finishing with 23 points, five assists and four rebounds with Emma Pass adding 21 points and four assists.

Marita Payne also contributed 14 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots in her team's win.

Stephanie Jones did all she could for the Eagles finishing with 17 points and 13 rebounds with Dannielle Devenny adding 10 points and Nicole Jorre St Jorre nine to go with five rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Rockingham ensured it will enter Sunday's clash with Lakeside with both still undefeated in 2014 with the Flames proving too good for the Slammers winning by 27 points.

The Flames have now won their opening eight games of the season while the Slammers have lost four straight after winning their first match of the campaign.

Samantha Whitcomb had a huge night for Rockingham with 26 points, 13 rebounds, nine assists and three steals as she flirted with a triple-double while shooting 9-of-16 from the field.

Darcee Garbin also added 20 points and eight rebounds for the Flames with Jacinta Bourne contributing 19 points and five boards, and Kaye Tucker 10 points.

Amy Patton top-scored for South West with 17 points and 12 rebounds with Brittany Giddon adding 16 points, six boards, two assists, two steals and two blocked shots.

Catherine Waycott also added 11 points and six rebounds for the Slammers.

And in men's SBL action on Thursday night, the Cockburn Cougars finally returned to the winner's list beating the Vorian Agency East Perth Eagles 101-85 and the Rockingham Flames continued their hot form downing the Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers 94-83.

Cockburn's 16-point win over East Perth gets the Cougars off the bottom of the men's SBL standings with it being just their second win of 2014 following a six-game losing run. The Eagles slip to a 3-7 record with the loss.

Gavin Field had a huge night for the Cougars with 29 points, 15 rebounds, six blocked shots, three assists and two steals. He also shot 10-of-16 from the field and 4-of-6 from three-point range.

Damien Scott only had 13 points for Cockburn but he did shoot 3-of-5 from downtown and still contributed seven rebounds and four assists.

Anthony Borden also added 18 points, eight rebounds and three blocks for the Cougars while shooting 7-of-11 from the floor with Seva Chan finishing with 16 points and six assists, and Jaarod Holmes 10 points, eight boards and five assists.

Sunday Dech led the way for the Eagles finishing with 26 points on 11-of-17 shooting from the field including 3-of-4 from downtown.

Joe-Alan Tupaea added 14 points and nine rebounds for East Perth, Kyle Armour 14 points and seven assists, and Nikola Donlagic 13 points.

Rockingham remains on top of the men's SBL standings with a ninth-straight victory to improve to a 9-1 record after beating South West by 11 points. The Slammers have now lost five straight matches after starting the season with two consecutive wins.

Cooper Land continued his hot form for the Flames with another 26 points and 12 rebounds while shooting 7-of-18 from the field, and 7-of-8 from the foul line.

Tom Remmerswaal was also terrific for Rockingham with 24 points and four rebounds with Taylor Land adding 13 points and six assists, Jarryd Griffin 10 points and 13 boards, and Andrew Bowman 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Clive Weeden top-scored for the Slammers with 22 points and 11 rebounds with Ty Harrelson adding 21 points, eight assists and seven rebounds, and Jonathan Todd Hendley 14 points and six rebounds.
