Flames women the remaining unbeaten team (Week 7 Sunday SBL wrap)

THE Rockingham Flames' women remain the last unbeaten team in the SBL for 2014 while last year's men's grand finalists Lakeside and Joondalup both scored impressive wins on Sunday as did the Stirling Senators.

There remains just the one unbeaten team left in the entire SBL now after seven rounds of the 2014 season and that is the Orange Autos Rockingham Flames women.

They met the Lakeside Lightning in a battle of the last two remaining unbeaten teams on Sunday at Mike Barnett Sports Complex, and it was the Flames who proved too good running out 76-61 winners on their home floor.

The win improves Rockingham's women to a 9-0 record on the season to now be three wins ahead of the 6-1 Lightning following Sunday's result.

Samantha Whitcomb led the way for the Flames with 23 points, 11 rebounds and five assists on the back of shooting 8-of-14 from the field.

Tarsha Fletcher added 12 points for Rockingham with Kaye Tucker scoring 12 points to go with six boards and four assists.

Jacinta Bourne also had nine points, nine rebounds and three assists.

Emily Fielding top-scored for the Lightning with 21 points and eight rebounds with Krystal Stoneking contributing 15 points and nine boards, and Kari Pickens 12 points and a massive 21 rebounds.

Sunday's other fixture in the women's competition saw the defending champion Joondalup Wolves beat the Schweigen East Perth Eagles 62-56 at Joondalup Basketball Stadium.

That six-point win improves the Wolves to a 5-2 record on the season and into fourth position in the standings while the Eagles are just 2-7, but clearly are a far superior team to the line-up that won just the one match in 2013.

Shani Amos top-scored for the Wolfpack with 16 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals with Alex Kerr adding 12 points (eight rebounds), Megan Lee 10 points and Ellyce Ironmonger 10 points (15 rebounds, six steals, three blocks).

Stephanie Jones led the way for the Eagles with 17 points and 10 rebounds with Haylee DeSousa 13 points to go with 10 rebounds.

Meanwhile in the men's SBL matches on Sunday, the Joondalup Wolves beat the Vorian Agency East Perth Eagles 99-89 and the Lakeside Lightning defeated the Orange Autos Rockingham Flames 111-106.

The third match of the day saw the Stirling Senators beat the Sun City Plumbing Geraldton Buccaneers 108-94 at Warwick Leisure Centre.

The Wolves played their only game of the weekend and beat the Eagles by 10 points with Joondalup now improving to a 5-3 record while East Perth slipped to 3-8 having also lost to the Cockburn Cougars on Thursday night.

Rob Huntington was the star for Joondalup finishing with 38 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks while shooting 16-of-25 from the floor.

Seb Salinas added a triple-double made up of 26 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists with Sean Easther also contributing 11 points and 11 boards.

Sunday Dech again top-scored for East Perth with 27 points and eight rebounds with Kyle Armour adding 18 points, Drew Williamson 15 and Joe-Alan Tupaea 10.

Meanwhile, the defending champion Lakeside avoided a second loss this weekend having been beaten by Geraldton on Saturday night with the Lightning recording a five-point win over Rockingham.

The win improves Lakeside to a 6-3 record on the season while the Flames remain on top of the standings at 9-2.

Caleb Palkert was unstoppable for the Lightning finishing the afternoon with 43 points, seven rebounds and six blocked shots while shooting 17-of-25 from the field and 7-of-10 from downtown.

Brad Tinsley also added 25 points and eight assists for Lakeside with Brad Jackson contributing 12 points and Jarrad Prue 12 to go with another supremely-impressive 23 rebounds.

Cooper Land top-scored for Rockingham with 31 points and eight rebounds with Andrew Bowman contributing 29 points, Tom Remmerswaal 20 and Taylor Land 18 to go with 10 rebounds and eight assists.

Stirling's win over Geraldton improved the Senators to a 4-3 record on the season while the Buccaneers slipped to 7-3.

Josh Throns was the star of the afternoon for the Senators with 31 points and eight rebounds on the back of shooting 10-of-20 including 6-of-11 from three-point territory.

Austin Bruton also added 19 points, Jordan Wild 16 (16 rebounds), Cody Ellis 16 and Nikolas Iliadis 14.

Carter Cook did all he could for the Buccaneers finishing with 34 points and seven rebounds with Odartey Blankson 32 points, nine boards and six assists.

However, the Buccs dearly missed Bennie Lewis for most of the game with him restricted to just 10 minutes of court time and three points.

Aaron Ralph did contribute 13 points and six rebounds for Geraldton.
