Redbacks' Dominate Hawks

The Perth Redbacks’ Men’s State Basketball League team broke the Perry Lakes Hawks four-game winning streak with a dominant 113 to 93 away-game win.

This followed on from their 108 to 90 win over the Hawks earlier in the year.

This win was set up with a dramatic 44-point opening quarter by the Redbacks, after which they never looked back.

Coach Nik Lackovic was extremely pleased with his team’s effort which he considered translated into a great win.

“The focal point for us was to control the tempo, spread the floor and attack the taller Hawks line-up which I felt we did effectively,” he said.

There were six Redbacks’ players who scored more than 10, with centre Dennis Tawhiti being their highest scorer with 22 along with eight rebounds.

Small-forward Jarrad Prior scored 21 along with four rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots while 20-year-old shooting guard Marshall Nelson had 18 and 11 rebounds.

Forward Stan Okoye scored 18 along with nine rebounds while point-guard Joel Wagner had seven assists, six rebounds and 11 points and Jarrad Jackson had 10 points, three assists and two steals.

This was the Redbacks’ men’s third win in a row and sees them with six wins and three losses and in fourth-place in the 14-team competition.

The Redbacks’ women’s team had a heartbreaking 73 to 76 loss against the sixth-placed Hawks.

They missed out on a key chance to record their first win of the year after leading for 31 of the 40 minutes and failing to capitalise on an eight-point lead at the start of the last quarter.

Coach Stuart Budd was very proud in the way the young group handled themselves in a very tight and physical game.

“All the hard work at training is starting to pay off in the games and we are looking forward to being competitive for the rest of the season against all opponents,” he said.

Redbacks’ point guard Monique Kickett was their top scorer with 22, which included five successful three-point shots from seven attempts, along with five rebounds and two steals.

Redbacks’ centre Alix Hayward scored 18 and had seven rebounds and six assists, while forward Jess Jakens also had 18 along with 14 rebounds and two steals.

They remain in 12th place in the 12-team competition after nine games.

The Redbacks’ next game is this Friday at Eaton against the Bunbury Slammers, with the women’s game tipping off at 6.30PM and the men’s game at 8.30PM.
