Flames down Lightning in battle of unbeaten teams (Week 7 Women's SBL Wrap)

THE Rockingham Flames' women beat the South West Slammers on Friday to ensure the battle of the unbeaten teams on Sunday where they maintained their winning start to the 2014 SBL season with a win over the Lakeside Lightning.

The round opened back on Thursday with two matches that saw the Cockburn Cougars beat the Schweigen East Perth Eagles 75-60 at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre and the Orange Autos Rockingham Flames defeat the Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers 101-74 at Eaton Recreation Centre.

There was then the one match on Anzac Day with the Kalamunda Eastern Suns beating the Willetton Tigers 80-52 at Willetton Basketball Stadium.

On Saturday night, there were two thrilling matches with the Perry Lakes Hawks defeating the Perth Redbacks 76-73 at the WA Basketball Centre and the Mandurah Magic downed the Kalamunda Eastern Suns 76-75 at Ray Owen Sports Centre.

The round then concluded on Sunday with the Joondalup Wolves beating the Schweigen East Perth Eagles 62-56 at Joondalup Basketball Stadium and the Orange Autos Rockingham Flames beat the Lakeside Lightning 76-61 in the battle of the unbeaten teams at Mike Barnett Sports Complex.

The weekend's results leave the Orange Autos Rockingham Flames as the last remaining unbeaten team after their wins over the Slammers and Lightning.

That sees the Flames sit out on top of the standings with a 9-0 record followed by the now 6-1 Lakeside Lightning.

The Mandurah Magic have won four straight matches to be in third spot on 6-2 followed by the Joondalup Wolves (5-2), Cockburn Cougars (4-2), Perry Lakes Hawks (4-3), Stirling Senators (2-3) and Kalamunda Eastern Suns (3-6).

The Willetton Tigers put in a poor showing on Anzac Day at home and as a result now slump to a 2-5 record followed by the Schweigen East Perth Eagles (2-7), Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers (1-4) and Perth Redbacks (0-9).

Throughout those seven women's matches across the four days, there was some supremely impressive individual performances.

On Thursday, Sam Richards was the star for the Cougars finishing with 23 points, five assists and four rebounds with Emma Pass adding 21 points and four assists. Marita Payne also contributed 14 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots.

Stephanie Jones did all she could for the Eagles finishing with 17 points and 13 rebounds.

Samantha Whitcomb had a huge night for Rockingham with 26 points, 13 rebounds, nine assists and three steals as she flirted with a triple-double while shooting 9-of-16 from the field.

Darcee Garbin also added 20 points and eight rebounds for the Flames with Jacinta Bourne contributing 19 points and five boards.

Amy Patton top-scored for South West with 17 points and 12 rebounds.

Jennie Rintala led the way on Anzac Day for Kalamunda finishing with 18 points, eight rebounds, four steals, two assists and two blocks on the back of shooting 4-of-6 from three-point range.

Antonio Edmondson top-scored for the Tigers with 20 points with Melissa Marsh the only other player to score in double-figures with 13 points to go with eight rebounds and four assists.

Lisa Wallbutton went scoreless in 23 minutes of court time and shooting 0-of-6 from the floor. She did pull in five rebounds and dish out four assists though.

Kate Anthony was the star on Saturday night for the Hawks finishing with 28 points and six rebounds on the back of shooting 10-of-20 from the field.

Monique Kickett stepped up for her best performance of the season for the Redbacks with 22 points and five rebounds with Alix Hayward contributing 18 points, seven boards and six assists.

Jess Jakens also added 18 points, 14 rebounds and three blocked shots for Perth.

Hailey Dunham put on her best showing of the season for the Magic with 27 points and nine rebounds.

Alison Schwagmeyer top-scored for the Eastern Suns with 21 points, nine rebounds and six assists.

Whitcomb again led the way for the Flames on Sunday against the Lightning with 23 points, 11 rebounds and five assists on the back of shooting 8-of-14 from the field.

Emily Fielding top-scored for the Lightning with 21 points and eight rebounds with Krystal Stoneking contributing 15 points and nine boards, and Kari Pickens 12 points and a massive 21 rebounds.

Shani Amos top-scored for the Wolfpack with 16 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals with Alex Kerr adding 12 points (eight rebounds), Megan Lee 10 points and Ellyce Ironmonger 10 points (15 rebounds, six steals, three blocks).

Stephanie Jones led the way for the Eagles with 17 points and 10 rebounds with Haylee DeSousa 13 points to go with 10 rebounds.
