Double wins for Flames, Lightning (Week 9 Friday night SBL wrap)

THE Rockingham Flames and Lakeside Lightning men and women both scored impressive victories over the Joondalup Wolves and Perth Redbacks in the SBL on Friday night.

The two women's matches on Friday night in the SBL saw the Orange Autos Rockingham Flames beat the Joondalup Wolves 77-63 at Mike Barnett Sports Complex and the Lakeside Lightning down the Perth Redbacks 88-42 at Lakeside Recreation Centre.

The Flames were coming off a bye and it didn’t put any sort of dampener on their hot form as they remained unbeaten after 10 matches this SBL season with an impressive 14-point win over last year's grand finalists.

Rockingham now holds a 10-0 record following the win on the back of 28 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals from Sam Whitcomb who also shot 10-of-18 from the field and 4-of-9 from downtown.

Darcee Garbin also scored 16 points and pulled in five rebounds for the Flames with Jacinta Bourne finishing with 12 points, six boards and four steals.

The Wolves, meanwhile, slip to a 6-3 record despite 21 points and five rebounds from Alex Kerr who shot 9-of-12 from the floor for the night.

Shani Amos also finished with 13 points, five rebounds and five assists with Ellyce Ironmonger adding 10 points, six boards and four assists.

Lakeside consolidated second position with a comfortable 46-point win over Perth with the Redbacks remaining winless after 11 matches so far in 2014.

The Lightning improved to a 7-2 record with the victory with Emily Fielding top-scoring with 17 points, five rebounds, three blocked shots, three steals and two assists.

Ashleigh Grant added 14 points, nine rebounds and three blocks for Lakeside with Kari Pickens contributing 12 points and 11 boards, and Chanah Crugnale 10 points.

Jess Jakens did what she could for the Redbacks with 15 points while Alix Hayward added 10 points and nine rebounds. Emily Harris also scored 11 points.

Meanwhile, in SBL men's action on Friday night the Orange Autos Rockingham Flames beat the Joondalup Wolves 96-86 and the Lakeside Lightning defeated the Perth Redbacks 112-107.

The Flames extended their gap on top of the men's SBL standings with the 10-point win at home over the Wolves with Rockingham now improving to a 10-3 record while last year's grand finalists the Wolves slip to 6-4 in fifth.

Cooper Land had a huge night for the Flames with 29 points and 21 rebounds with Ryan Godfrey adding 22 points, three rebounds and three assists. Tom Remmerswaal also had another 18 points for the Flames.

Rob Huntington did all he could for the Wolves with 29 points and 10 rebounds with Seb Salinas continuing his outstanding form with 27 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists.

The Lightning scored a hard fought five-point win over the in-form Redbacks with Lakeside improving to a 7-4 record and Perth slipping to 6-5.

Brad Tinsley was the star of the night for the Lightning with 42 points, four rebounds and four assists.

Caleb Palkert added 24 points and seven rebounds for Lakeside on the back of 10-of-19 shooting from the field.

Brad Jackson finished with 21 points and six rebounds as well for Lakeside with Jarrad Prue adding another 12 points and 22 rebounds on perfect 6-of-6 shooting from the field.

Stan Okoye did all he could for the Redbacks finishing with 46 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots on the back of shooting 18-of-31 from the field.

Joel Wagner also finished with 26 points, nine assists and seven rebounds for Perth with Jarrad Prior scoring 14 points and Dennis Tawhiti 12 to go with 12 rebounds.
