Big wins again for league-leading Lady, men Flames (Week 9 Sunday SBL wrap)

THE Rockingham Flames men's and women's teams remain entrenched on top of both SBL competitions after wins on Sunday over the Willetton Tigers.

There were three women's SBL matches on Sunday afternoon to close out Week 9 action with the Stirling Senators beating the Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers 65-63 at Warwick Leisure Centre, the Orange Autos Rockingham Flames defeating the Willetton Tigers 80-76 at Mike Barnett Sports Complex and the Kalamunda Eastern Suns thrashing the Schweigen East Perth Eagles 99-71 at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre.

The Senators scored a thrilling two-point win over the Slammers with Stirling's win improving it to a 4-3 record to be in fifth position in the standings while South West slips to 2-7 and in 10th spot.

Tegan Walker was the star of the show for the Senators with 28 points and 10 rebounds on the back of shooting 11-of-16 from the field and 6-of-7 from the free-throw line.

Amy Patton once again top-scored for the Slammers with another 21 points and 13 rebounds.

The league-leading Flames remain unbeaten now after 11 matches also scoring a thrilling four-point win over the Tigers. While it was a loss to Willetton to see it fall to a 3-7 record, it was encouraging showing against the 11-0 Rockingham.

Sam Whitcomb top-scored again for Rockingham with 24 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals while Talisia Bourne contributed 19 points and Darcee Garbin 10 to go with nine boards and four blocked shots.

Antonia Edmondson had a huge afternoon for the Tigers with 30 points on the back of shooting 10-of-16 from the field and 3-of-4 from long range.

Melissa Marsh also scored 16 points, five rebounds and four assists for Willetton while Lisa Wallbutton contributed 11 points and 11 boards.

The Eastern Suns then thumped the Eagles by 28 points with the win improving Kalamunda to a 5-6 record in eighth spot as East Perth fell to 2-9 in 11th spot.

Alison Schwagmeyer starred for the Suns with 26 points and six rebounds shooting 6-of-11 from the field and 13-of-14 from the charity stripe.

Melissa Moyle added 18 points for Kalamunda and Jennie Rintala 15 to go with six rebounds and four blocked shots.

Jodee Sontay top-scored for the Eagles with 12 points while Emily Burton, Haylee DeSousa and Dannielle Devenny all scored nine points.

There were four matches in the men's SBL on Sunday afternoon starting with the Perth Redbacks defeating the Silver Lake Resources Goldfields Giants 108-73 at Belmont Oasis.

The Vorian Agency East Perth Eagles also beat the Kalamunda Eastern Suns 96-88, the Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers defeated the Stirling Senators 115-112 and the Orange Autos Rockingham Flames downed the Willetton Tigers 110-102.

The Redbacks scored a thumping 35-point win over the Giants that see Perth improve to fifth position in the standings and to a 7-5 record while Goldfields are struggling at 2-10 to be in last place.

Jarrad Prior top-scored for Perth with 24 points while Stan Okoye contributed 19 points and 13 rebounds.

Dennis Tawhiti also contributed 19 points and 10 boards while Marshall Nelson finished with 15 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

Duran Blue finished up with 22 points for the Giants while Lordan Franich contributed 13 points and eight rebounds.

The Eagles proved too good for the Eastern Suns winning by eight points in a clash highlighted by the match up of centres with Tom Jervis and Luke Nevill.

The win improves East Perth to a 6-8 record on the season while with the loss Kalamunda slips to 2-10.

Sunday Dech again led the way for the Eagles with 24 points and seven rebounds with Kyle Armour also scoring 24 points to go with his nine assists.

Jervis added 17 points, nine rebounds and five blocked shots with Nikola Donlagic also ending up with 17 points and six boards.

Nevill led the way for the Eastern Suns with 28 points and eight rebounds on the back of shooting 12-of-22 from the field and 2-of-4 from long range.

Ben Smith finished up with 20 points for the Suns with Adhar Mayen also contributing 15 points and 11 rebounds.

The Slammers backed up their win to open the weekend over the defending champion Lakeside Lightning beating the Senators in a thriller by three points.

The two-win weekend sees South West improve to a 7-5 record in seventh spot while Stirling slips to ninth spot on 4-5.

Jonathan Todd Hendley top-scored for the Slammers with 28 points, 11 rebounds and four assists with Ty Harrelson ending up with 21 points, 12 boards and seven assists.

Clive Weeden also contributed 20 points and nine rebounds with Wade Hitchcock finishing with 19 points and Josh Weir 13.

Cody Ellis top-scored for the Senators with 30 points and eight rebounds with Jordan Wild adding 29 points and 17 rebounds, Josh Throns 26 points, seven boards and six steals, and Austin Bruton 23 points to go with seven assists.

The Flames then further consolidated top position with an eight-point victory over the Tigers with Rockingham now sitting on an 11-3 record while Willetton is 4-7 in 12th following a double-loss weekend.

Tom Remmerswaal led the way for the Flames with 28 points and nine rebounds with Ryan Godfrey and Cooper Land both adding 26 points apiece.

Andrew Bowman also finished with 18 points and nine rebounds for Rockingham.

Quinn McDowell did all he could for Willetton finishing with 37 points and eight rebounds while Nicholas Cody added 22 points and John Dickson 21 to go with seven rebounds.
