Flames extend lead with two more strong wins (Week 9 Women's SBL Wrap)

THE Rockingham Flames scored two more wins in Week 9 to remain unbeaten atop the women's SBL after 11 matches but the Lakeside Lightning, Mandurah Magic, Stirling Senators and Kalamunda Eastern Suns also had good weekends.

There were just the two women's SBL matches on Friday night with the Orange Autos Rockingham Flames beating the Joondalup Wolves 77-63 at Mike Barnett Sports Complex and the Lakeside Lightning downing the Perth Redbacks 88-42 at Lakeside Recreation Centre.

Then in the three matches on Saturday night, the Willetton Tigers beat the Schweigen East Perth Eagles 84-72, the Lakeside Lightning downed the Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers 76-48 and the Mandurah Magic thrashed the Soprano Lady Cougars 80-48.

Week 9 of the SBL concluded with three games on Sunday with the Stirling Senators beating the Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers 65-63 at Warwick Leisure Centre, the Orange Autos Rockingham Flames defeating the Willetton Tigers 80-76 at Mike Barnett Sports Complex and the Kalamunda Eastern Suns thrashing the Schweigen East Perth Eagles 99-71 at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre.

The weekend's results leave the Orange Autos Rockingham Flames still out on top of the women's SBL standings having now won its first 11 matches of the season.

The Lakeside Lightning (8-2) are in second position followed by the Mandurah Magic (8-2), the Joondalup Wolves (6-3), Stirling Senators (5-4), Soprano Cockburn Cougars (5-4), Perry Lakes Hawks (4-4) and Kalamunda Eastern Suns (5-6).

Just outside the top-eight are the Willetton Tigers (3-7), Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers (2-7), Schweigen East Perth Eagles (2-9) and Perth Redbacks (0-11).

Once again, as well as teams like Rockingham, Lakeside and Mandurah making a statement over the weekend, there were some outstanding individual performances.

Rockingham improved to 10-0 on Friday night on the back of 28 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals from Sam Whitcomb who also shot 10-of-18 from the field and 4-of-9 from downtown.

Darcee Garbin also scored 16 points and pulled in five rebounds for the Flames with Jacinta Bourne finishing with 12 points, six boards and four steals.

Alex Kerr had 21 points and five rebounds for Joondalup while shooting 9-of-12 from the floor for the night.

The Lightning also won on Friday with Emily Fielding top-scoring with 17 points, five rebounds, three blocked shots, three steals and two assists.

Ashleigh Grant added 14 points, nine rebounds and three blocks for Lakeside with Kari Pickens contributing 12 points and 11 boards, and Chanah Crugnale 10 points.

Jess Jakens did what she could for the Redbacks with 15 points while Alix Hayward added 10 points and nine rebounds.

Ebony Antonio led the way for the Tigers with 26 points and five rebounds on the back of shooting 10-of-16 from the field. Melissa Marsh also added 14 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

Nicole Jorre St Jorre top-scored for the Eagles with 16 points with Dannielle Devenny adding 12 and Emily Burton 11 to go with 14 rebounds.

Kari Pickens had a big night on Saturday for the Lightning with 25 points, 11 rebounds and four assists on the back of shooting 11-of-16 from the floor. Emily Fielding added 22 points and 10 rebounds.

Amy Patton worked hard for the Slammers to finish with 20 points, nine rebounds, four assists and four steals.

Hailey Dunham had a huge night for the Magic with 30 points and 10 rebounds on the back of shooting 12-of-23 from the field. Casey Mihovilovich also contributed 20 points and five assists.

Then on Sunday, Tegan Walker was the star of the show for the Senators with 28 points and 10 rebounds on the back of shooting 11-of-16 from the field and 6-of-7 from the free-throw line.

Amy Patton once again top-scored for the Slammers with another 21 points and 13 rebounds.

Sam Whitcomb top-scored again for Rockingham with 24 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals while Talisia Bourne contributed 19 points and Darcee Garbin 10 to go with nine boards and four blocked shots.

Antonia Edmondson had a huge afternoon for the Tigers with 30 points on the back of shooting 10-of-16 from the field and 3-of-4 from long range.

Melissa Marsh also scored 16 points, five rebounds and four assists for Willetton while Lisa Wallbutton contributed 11 points and 11 boards.

Alison Schwagmeyer starred for the Eastern Suns with 26 points and six rebounds shooting 6-of-11 from the field and 13-of-14 from the charity stripe.

Melissa Moyle added 18 points for Kalamunda and Jennie Rintala 15 to go with six rebounds and four blocked shots.
