Redbacks hard-fought win

The Perth Redbacks Men’s State Basketball League team  had a tight, hard-fought 111 to 105 away-game win against the Goldfields Giants.

In front of a large and parochial Kalgoorlie crowd the game was an exciting affair played at a high intensity, with the largest gap being eight points and the lead changing 22 times.

Redbacks’ captain Jarrad Prior described it as a ‘dirty win’.

“By that I mean we let them control the tempo too much but eventually still worked out a way to win, which is what you have to do to be a good team in this league,” he said.

Forward and US import Stan Okoye was their highest scorer with 33 along with 15 rebounds.

Centre Dennis Tawhiti scored 22 along with seven rebounds while Prior had 14 points, 10 rebounds, two steals and three assists.

Point guard Jarrad Jackson had 12 assists and 13 points while forward Ashley Stephens also scored 13.

The win sees the Redbacks’ men move up two-places in the 14-team competition with nine wins and six losses.

This Friday sees the Redbacks’ women back in action at the Belmont Oasis Leisure and Aquatic Centre against the Stirling Senators at 6.30PM, with the men’s game tipping off at 8.30PM.

This is followed on Sunday at 2PM at the WA Basketball Centre with the Redbacks’ men taking on the top-placed Geraldton Buccaneers.
