Coaches react to Week 14 of the SBL

SOME SBL women's and men's coaches shared their thoughts on how their respective 14th round weekends of the 2014 season went.

WOMEN'S
KALAMUNDA EASTERN SUNS
Coach – Craig Mansfield

Completing, and winning, three games in under 23 hours (including D-League) had its challenges for our program over the weekend.

Sass Knox and Meghan D’Arcy were only available for one game and we had a slight injury scare to Chelsea Armstrong against Redbacks. The efforts of the girls, our team manager and training staff was appreciated in preparing and completing everything for recovery including nutrition and ice baths.

We played some patches of fantastic basketball at both ends and even if it’s not always pretty most games we score enough points to win. Our defence must continue to develop if we want to advance beyond the first couple of weekends in August. And finally, YES SPURS!

ORANGE AUTOS ROCKINGHAM FLAMES
Coach – Ryan Petrik

We knew Mandurah had no Ash Sidebottom, so we could really lock in on Dunham and Milo a little more than normal. I think they average close to 40 points per game between them, so we knew where it was going to come from, and had to load up our helpside towards them.

It was really pleasing to have both Garbin and Whitcomb go off on the same night. Garbin's two best games of the year have been when Sam has been at her quietest, so to have them both play well on the same evening was terrific.

But again it was Tarsha Fletcher whose work stood out for the coaching staff. She obviously had some help, but to keep Dunham to nine points on 15 shots we thought was every bit as important as what Sam and Darcee did at the other end.

MEN'S
RAW NUTRITION COCKBURN COUGARS
Coach – Stephen Charlton

Really pleasing win in Kalgoorlie. With our starting back court out injured we only played seven guys and I was really proud of the effort from all of them. We really had to win to keep our season alive and the guys played hard and committed for the full 48 minutes.

Special mention to Jaarod Holmes in his first game as a starter and at the other end of the spectrum old man Nener dragging himself around for 14 dimes.

VORIAN AGENCY EAST PERTH EAGLES
Coach – Adam Forde

It was a tough win at home against the Joondalup Wolves, especially with Trian back and playing the way he did against us. We were fortunate to walk away with the win.

ORANGE AUTOS ROCKINGHAM FLAMES
Coach – Mark Utley

Great crowd and great to get win over local rivals the Magic. Cooper was great and big Chuds had a great last quarter as well.
