Slammers women look to build on breakthrough away win

After opening a two game advantage on the chasing pack the eighth-placed women’s Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers can go a long way towards securing a finals position with victories over Cockburn and Willetton this weekend.

Four Slammers hit double figures in an impressive 64-56 triumph over East Perth — the South West’s first road win of the year — and coach Darren Austin hopes to build on that breakthrough against the Cougars on Friday.

“We were down by 10 midway through the third quarter but the team stepped up to come away with a much-needed win,” Austin said.

“I keep saying it but with Bianca Donovan not around the other girls have to step up offensively so getting four into double digits was very pleasing.

“I thought Cat Waycott probably played her best game of the season and Brittany Gliddon was outstanding also.”

Waycott had 16 points and three steals while holding experienced East Perth forward Stephanie Jones to just seven second half points.

On Friday the 24-year-old will be trusted with another crucial defensive assignment - matching-up on explosive Cockburn import Emma Pass.

Averaging 16 points and 7 rebounds per game, the former UK international has been an integral part of the seventh-placed Cougars success this season.

“Cat is athletic and a very good rebounder so she usually gets the toughest job on defence and Friday will be no different,” Austin said.

“Cockburn has struggled the last few weeks so we have a real opportunity to win another road game and Willetton has also had issues away from home so that is a game we should win on our own court.”
