WA's Jess Byrnes takes home top award

WA State Basketball League referee Jessica Byrnes has been named the 2013 Female Referee of the Year at the 22nd Annual Australian Junior Basketball Awards.

It was an exceptional performance at the Under 20 Australian Junior Championships (AJC) in 2013 which led to Jess being nominated for the award.

This is just one of many career achievements as a referee for Byrnes, who received a gold medal appointment at the 2012 Under 18 AJC which included NBA draftee Dante Exum who was playing for Victoria Metro.

Byrnes has also received medal games at the Under 14 Club Championships and Under 16 AJC and is an Australian Sports Commission scholarship holder for officiating.

A young referee of the SBL and WABL competitions in Western Australia, Jess has shown committment to her development as a member of the National Referee Development Program under NBL referees Damian Lyons and David Bull.

On behalf of Basketball Western Australia and the SBL we would like to congratulate Jess on this outstanding achievement.
