Heron eyes clean sweep

Sun City Plumbing Geraldton Buccaneers coach Mark Heron is eager to finish the side’s quarterfinal series in two games after the travelling Buccs took out game one at the weekend.

Game two will be played on Saturday night in Geraldton.

Game three of the series is scheduled for Sunday at noon, but Heron hopes it does not get that far.

He admitted the team had not played well when in a position where they did not need to win, referring to how they wrapped up a top two finish early in the season and fell into a form slump.

“It would be great to finish it in two, but finish it in three and you are in the same position and still have time to recover,” he said.

“We want to keep winning. We have four more wins to the championship and that is what we are focused on.

“We have to be really focused, and that is one thing this group have been this week. We know it means nothing if we lose Saturday night.”

Heron said he would review the tape of Saturday’s win before deciding whether or not the team needed to change match-ups or tactics.

The championship winning player with the Goldfields Giants was pleased with his players’ performance.

“Overall, the performance was outstanding,” he said.

“We spoke about them making a run at half-time and how we were going to counter that and we did.”

“In the fourth quarter they lifted their effort and crashed the offensive boards and we did not do a good job of countering that.”
