Elizabeth Woods Appointed to Basketball Australia Board

Basketball WA is delighted to announce that Elizabeth Woods has been appointed to the Board of Basketball Australia. Ms Woods will commence with Basketball Australia immediately.

Ms Woods will step down from her position as Chair of the Basketball WA and West Coast Waves Boards, in order to accept the position with the governing body of the sport in Australia.

Joining the Council of Basketball WA in 1992, Ms Woods remained a Council member until 2006. She was elected to the Basketball WA Executive Committee in 1996 and served as Vice President between 1997 and 2002. She then served as President from 2002 until 2011, at which time under the new Basketball WA Constitution, she was appointed to the position of Chair of the Basketball WA Board.

During her time with Basketball WA, Ms Woods has overseen a strong period of growth for the sport in Western Australia, including the sports relocation to the WA Basketball Centre in 2010 and governance and constitutional reform.

Ms Woods previously served on the Basketball Australia Board in 2006, remaining on the Board until November 2008 when the NBL and Basketball Australia merged to form a new company structure.

Basketball WA CEO Rick Smith thanked Ms Woods for her outstanding 22 year contribution to the sport at a number of levels.

“Basketball in WA has come a long way in the past 22 years and Libby has been an integral part of that growth and development.”

“Libby has been instrumental in many major projects, including maintaining a presence in WA of the West Coast Waves, governance and constitutional reform and relocating to the WA Basketball Centre just to name a few.”

“On behalf of the Basketball WA Board, management team, and our members, I’d like to thank Libby for her exemplary leadership and service to our sport in Western Australia and wish her well for her new role with Basketball Australia.”

Ms Woods was awarded life membership to Basketball WA in 1999, the Australian Sports Medal in 2000 and Basketball WA Volunteer of the Year Award in 2002.
She has been a FIBA Technical Commissioner since 2005, having officiated at the Sydney Olympic Games and also at previous Commonwealth Games.

Ms Woods holds memberships to a number of professional groups, has been on the Board of Wheelchair Sports since 2005, is a member of the Fisheries Review Group IFAAC and is a former member of the WA Sports Federation (2006-08) and Department of Sport and Recreation Officials Reference Panel (1996-2005).

Keith Dunlap (Deputy Chair) has been appointed as the new Chair of Basketball WA. An accountant by profession, Mr Dunlap is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and has been on the Basketball WA Executive Committee/Board since 2007. A former State Basketball League player, Mr Dunlap has also held positions as a State Basketball League Commissioner and President of a local Basketball Association.
