Buccaneers put firepower on show in 53-point win (Week 2 Saturday night SBL wrap)

LAST year's men's SBL minor premiers the Geraldton Buccaneers gave Perry Lawks a full showing of their firepower with a 53-point win on Saturday night while the Joondalup Wolves men's and women's teams had a big wins over the Kalamunda Eastern Suns.

The three women's matches on Saturday night saw the South West Slammers beat the East Perth Eagles 54-51 at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre, the Cockburn Cougars down the Stirling Senators 54-45 at Warwick Leisure Centre and the Joondalup Wolves had a big 93-50 win over the Kalamunda Eastern Suns at Ray Owen Sports Centre.

It was a full night of men's action on Saturday with five matches beginning with the Geraldton Buccaneers hammering the Perry Lakes Hawks 130-77 at the WA Basketball Centre and the Rockingham Flames downing the Goldfields Giants 106-92 at Neils Hansen Basketball Stadium.

The South West Slammers then beat the defending champion East Perth Eagles 111-85 at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre while the Cockburn Cougars beat the Stirling Senators 108-100 at Warwick Leisure Centre and the Joondalup Wolves defeated the Kalamunda Eastern Suns 111-96 at Ray Owen Sports Centre.

The Eagles women put in a competitive showing against the Slammers but in the end lost a 19th straight match with South West winning by three points at Morley.

Deanica McCormick had a massive game for the Slammers ending up with 31 points, 10 rebounds, five steals and three assists while shooting 13-of-26 from the field.

She was the only player to score in double-figures for South West but Patricia Bright had a significant impact with five points, 12 rebounds and five blocked shots. Kate Fielding added seven points, five rebounds, three assists and three blocks off the bench as well.

Kelsey Maffin worked hard for the Eagles with 14 points, 11 rebounds and three assists with Dannielle Devenny adding 12 points and nine boards off the bench.

The Cougars bounced back from a seven-point loss to Perry Lakes on Friday night to beat the Senators by nine points at Warwick on Saturday.

Deanna Smith came off the bench for Cockburn but the playing-coach still played 28 minutes and finished with a game-high 22 points, four rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

Chelsea Evans was the only other Cougars player scoring in double-figures with 11 points, six rebounds and four assists.

Amber Land had a strong game for the Senators with 19 points and six rebounds with Emma Berryman adding 12 points off the bench. Tegan Walker also contributed seven points and five assists.

The Wolves then made a big statement on the road to the Eastern Suns on Saturday night recording an emphatic 43-point victory on the back of a 47-23 second half.

Five Joondalup players scored in double-figure with Nikita-Lee Martin finishing with 14 points (six rebounds, six assists), Rebecca Mercer 13 points, Ellyce Ironmonger 12 (six boards), Casey Lockwood 12 (10 rebounds) and Nonila Martin 10.

Jessie Edwards finished with 16 points and six rebounds for the Suns with Melissa Moyle adding 12 points and six boards, and Madeleine Dennis 12 points and eight rebounds.

Then in men's action on Saturday night, the Buccaneers put on a show at the WA Basketball Centre beating the Hawks by a remarkable 53 points.

The Buccs were on top by 25 points at half-time and then turned it up another notch in the third period piling on 36 points to just 14 from Perry Lakes. Then 33 points to 27 in the last quarter saw last year's grand finalists win by the massive margin.

Aaron Ralph top-scored for the Buccaneers with 30 points and seven rebounds while shooting 12-of-18 from the field and 6-of-11 from three-point territory.

Quincy Hankins-Cole also had a good night with 27 points, 11 rebounds and five assists for Geraldton with Bennie Lewis adding 18 points, Carter Cook 15, Daniel Thomas 12 and Isaac Smith 10 to go with six rebounds.

It was a tough night for the Hawks but Bryton Hobbs tried hard finishing with 25 points, six rebounds and four assists. Ryan O'Sullivan added 13 points, Ben Purser 10 and Jason Conrad eight to go with eight rebounds.

The Flames scored a strong 14-point win over the Giants in Geraldton on Saturday night as well with Cooper Land the star for the game with 34 points, 12 rebounds and three steals while shooting 12-of-21 from the floor and 5-of-8 from downtown.

Tom Remmerswaal added 20 points and seven rebounds for the Flames as well with Corey Craig finishing with 11 points, Luke Roberts 11 points and seven boards, and Taylor Land nine points, 16 assists and seven rebounds.

Jay Bowie did what he could for the Giants finishing with 27 points and nine rebounds with Jay Holmen contributing 14 points and 11 boards, John Santia 11 points, Shamus Ballantyne 10 (eight assists), Brandon Hewitt-Holloway nine (six assists), Edin Zunic eight (12 boards) and Daniel Forlano eight (four assists).

The Slammers continued their strong start to the new season with a 26-point win over the Eagles at Morley.

Tre Nicholls top-scored for the Slammers with 31 points while playing-coach Ty Harrelson finished with 24 points, eight rebounds, five assists and five steals. Trent Worthington added 12 points and 10 boards, and Brian Voelkel 11 points, 18 rebounds and eight assists.

It was an undermanned Eagles outfit with the defending champions without Sunday Dech, Rhys Vague and Tom Jervis, but Drew Williamson did what he could with 23 points. Jamie Barnett added 17 points and Nikola Donlagic 15.

The Cougars made it a two-win weekend backing up Friday's six-point win over the Hawks with an eight-point win over the Senators at Warwick on Saturday.

Gavin Field once again led the way for the Cougars with 31 points, 13 rebounds and six assists while Najee Lane contributed 23 points, 10 boards, seven assists and five steals.

Steven Van Lit ran the point well ending up with 14 points with Sheldon McIntyre ending up with seven points and seven rebounds.

Ryan Woodbury top-scored for the Senators with 25 points with Cody Ellis adding 21 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots.

Austin Bruton also had 16 points for Stirling, Thomas Witts 14 and Kyle Lindbergh had a triple-double with 14 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists.

The Wolves then capped off the Saturday night action with a solid 15-point win over the Suns on the road.

Trian Iliadis had 25 points, seven assists, five rebounds and two steals for the Wolves while Round 1's Player of the Week Kevin Davis had another 22 points, 15 rebounds, four blocks and three assists.

Rob Huntington added 15 points and 11 rebounds for Joondalup with Ben Ironmonger finishing with 12 points and seven assists, Seb Salinas 10 points, seven boards and five assists, and Damian Matacz 10 points.
