Battle of unbeaten teams highlights action (Week 3 Women's SBL Preview)

THE women's SBL unbeaten teams for 2015 all put those streaks on the line in Week 3 action across the weekend highlighted by two of them going head to head when the Mandurah Magic take on the Perry Lakes Hawks on Saturday night.

The week 3 women's SBL action begins with two matches on Friday night pitting the Rockingham Flames up against the Perth Redbacks at Mike Barnett Sports Complex while the Willetton Tigers play the Cockburn Cougars at Willetton Basketball Stadium. Both matches tip off at 6.30pm.

Then on Saturday night there are another three encounters with the Mandurah Magic playing the Perry Lakes Hawks at Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre, the Cockburn Cougars taking on the East Perth Eagles at Wally Hagan Stadium and the Stirling Senators facing the South West Slammers at Warwick Leisure Centre. All three clashes begin at 6pm.

And finally on Sunday, the Perth Redbacks take on the Mandurah Magic at Curtin Stadium and the South West Slammers play the Kalamunda Eastern Suns at Eaton Recreation Centre. Both tip off at midday.

The weekend's action begins on Friday night with the unbeaten Flames hosting the improving Redbacks. Rockingham might not have lost in defence of last year's championship, but they have only played the one game following the bye last weekend.

The Flames had a big 31-point win over the East Perth Eagles in the opening round and now get ready to take on a Redbacks team who might have only won twice in all of 2014, but who have clearly improved this season.

Perth beat last year's grand finalists the Lakeside Lightning 68-36 on the road last Friday night and now will be looking to really test themselves against the defending champions.

The other Friday night fixture pits the Tigers and Cougars up against one another in what should be a tremendous contest.

Willetton is unbeaten so far this season following a 15-point win over the Joondalup Wolves and then last week a 16-point victory over the East Perth Eagles.

The Cougars have also had a good start to the season despite the loss of key players Marita Payne, Sam Richards and Emma Pass coming into the new year.

Playing-coach Deanna Smith has led the way winning the first two Player of the Week awards with the Cougars coming out victorious in two of three matches and now it's a big test against the stacked, and unbeaten Tigers at Willetton.

Saturday night's action sees the unbeaten Magic take on a Hawks team also yet to taste defeat so far in 2015.

The Magic started the season with a 13-point win over the Kalamunda Eastern Suns and then had a 10-point victory last Sunday over the Stirling Senators.

Meanwhile, the Hawks had a big 25-point win over the East Perth Eagles to open the season and then a seven-point win over the Cougars last Friday.

Now one of them will remain unbeaten and reinforce themselves as real contenders by the end of Friday night, while the other will taste defeat for the first time in 2015.

The Cougars then back up their clash with the Tigers on Friday night by hosting the winless Eagles on Saturday with East Perth now having lost 20 consecutive matches including the last 16 of last year and the first four of 2015.

The final match of Saturday night is another beauty with the Senators hosting the unbeaten Slammers at Warwick.

Stirling has started the season with just one win from three games but their one win was by 18 points over the Redbacks before two losses last weekend to the Cougars and Magic.

The Slammers, meanwhile, have won their opening two matches of the season against the Lightning by 21 points Cougars by seven.

The round then concludes on Sunday with the Redbacks hosting the Magic at Curtin with Perth having played Rockingham on Friday night, and Mandurah having taken on Perry Lakes on Saturday evening.

The Slammers then also back up their clash with the Senators on Saturday by hosting the Eastern Suns on Sunday at noon. Kalamunda is so far winless in 2015 following losses to Mandurah and Joondalup.
