Slammers men and women remain unbeaten (Week 3 Sunday SBL wrap)

THE South West Slammers have played nine SBL matches so far this season between their men's and women's teams and remain unbeaten in both competitions following wins over the Kalamunda Eastern Suns in Sunday's Week 3 action.

The two women's matches on Sunday saw the Mandurah Magic beat the Perth Redbacks 50-44 at Curtin Stadium and the South West Slammers defeat the Kalamunda Eastern Suns 80-77 at Eaton Recreation Centre.

And then the two men's fixtures to close out the round saw the Mandurah Magic beat the Perth Redbacks 110-105 at Curtin Stadium and the South West Slammers down the Kalamunda Eastern Suns 105-88 at Eaton Recreation Centre.

The Slammers women remained unbeaten after four matches this season with a thrilling three-point win over a fast-finishing Eastern Suns team. The end result, though, means that South West sits on a 4-0 record and Kalamunda is 0-3.

Deanica McCormick had another dominant performance for the Slammers this time finishing with 31 points, six rebounds and six assists to help her team overcome a Suns team who finished with a dominant last quarter with 31 points to 12.

Kelly Bastow also had 20 points for South West with Kate Fielding contributing 15 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two blocks in a strong all-round display.

Madeleine Dennis did all she could for the Eastern Suns finishing with 20 points and 14 rebounds with Melissa Moyle contributing 20 points, 10 boards, five assists and two blocked shots.

Jessie Edwards also had a good impact for Kalamunda with 15 points and 10 rebounds with Natalia Soli'ai also adding 11 points and eight boards.

The Magic might have only scored 50 points against the Redbacks but that was enough for a six-point victory and for them to remain unbeaten after four matches so far in 2015.

Casey Mihovilovich top-scored for the Magic with 13 points and seven rebounds with Ashlee Sidebottom contributing 10 points, six boards and three assists. Briana Klasztorny also had nine points, nine rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots.

No Redbacks player scored in double-figures but Lauren Hall contributed eight points, eight rebounds and five blocked shots. Gabby Clayton also had seven points and 11 boards, and Meike Elkington seven points and nine rebounds.

And in the men's action on Sunday afternoon, Mandurah held off Perth to win by seven points at home with the Magic improving to a 3-2 record in the process while the Redbacks slipped to 1-4.

Paul Hafford led the way for the Magic with 31 points and seven rebounds in the win with Taylor Mullenax again delivering a strong performance with 24 points, seven boards and two steals.

Ben Smith had a good afternoon for Mandurah as well with 21 points, 13 rebounds, three steals and three blocked shots with Jarrad Jackson contributing 12 points and nine assists, and Rhett Della 10 points.

Ray Turner did all he could for the Redbacks finishing with 31 points, 19 rebounds, four blocks, three steals and three assists on the back of shooting 11-of-20 from the floor and 9-of-11 from the charity stripe.

Ben Smith contributed 25 points for the Redbacks as well with Joel Wagner finishing with 10 points, 12 assists, six rebounds and two steals. Marshall Brown added 15 points and nine boards but shot just 6-of-21 from the field and 2-of-8 from long range.

The Slammers remained unbeaten after five matches with a 17-point victory over the Suns at home on Sunday with Kalamunda now sitting on a 1-3 record after three rounds.

Tre Nichols had another terrific game for the Slammers with 30 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals while Clive Weeden backed up his big game on Saturday night with another 21 points and 13 boards.

Playing-coach Ty Harrelson had 20 points and nine assists with Brian Voelkel also delivering 11 points and 24 rebounds. Trent Worthington finished with 11 points, five rebounds and three assists as well.

Lien Phillip did all he could to try to spark the Suns to victory with 34 points and 21 rebounds while shooting 12-of-20 from the field and a perfect 9-of-9 from the free-throw line.

Seva Chan also had 16 points and seven assists for the Eastern Suns and Kerrod Horn 12 points.
