Magic prevail in battle of unbeaten women's teams (Week 4 Thursday night SBL wrap)

THE Mandurah Magic won the battle of unbeaten women's teams against the South West Slammers on Thursday night while the Willetton women, and Slammers and Wolves men are all yet to taste defeat in 2015.

The Easter round of action began on Thursday night with the three women's matches that saw the Willetton Tigers beat the Lakeside Lightning 80-53 at Willetton Basketball Stadium, the Mandurah Magic down the South West Slammers 74-67 at Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre and the Joondalup Wolves defeat the Stirling Senators 92-62 at Joondalup Basketball Stadium.

And in the men's action on Thursday night, the Willetton Tigers beat the Lakeside Lightning 95-79 at Willetton Basketball Stadium, the South West Slammers down the Mandurah Magic 113-94 at Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre and the Joondalup Wolves defeat the Stirling Senators 123-93 at Joondalup Basketball Stadium.

The Tigers won their fourth straight women's contest to start the season with their 27-point win over last year's grand finalists the Lightning. Lakeside is now yet to win a game still in 2015 in four attempts.

Kate Malpass led the way for the Tigers to continue her strong return to the SBL in 2015 with 19 points, eight rebounds and five assists. She had terrific support from Louella Tomlinson who also had 18 points, 14 boards, five blocked shots and three assists.

Ebony Antonio contributed 13 points and three assists for Willetton while Lisa Wallbutton had nine points, 13 rebounds and five assists off the bench. Zoe Harper had seven points and seven boards as well.

Ashleigh Grant worked hard for Lakeside finishing with 16 points and nine rebounds while Courtney Byrnes had 12 points, five boards, four blocks and three assists, and Amanda Pether 11 points, three rebounds and two assists.

In the battle of the unbeaten teams, it was the Magic who prevailed against the Slammers by seven points in a tremendous contest in Mandurah. The Magic have now improved to a perfect 5-0 record on the season while the Slammers slip to 4-1.

Casey Mihovilovich continued her stunning start to the 2015 season with the Magic as she continues to add to her glittering career leading her team to the seven-point win over the Slammers with 34 points, seven rebounds, four steals and three assists while shooting 11-of-20 from the floor and 5-of-11 from downtown.

Briana Klasztorny also had 15 points and 12 rebounds off the bench for Mandurah with Emma Klasztorny adding 14 points and nine boards. Ashlee Sidebottom also had nine points, nine rebounds, five assists and four steals.

Last week's Player of the Week Deanica McCormick had another strong game for the Slammers with 20 points, eight assists, six rebounds and three steals.

Patricia Bright added 12 points and seven rebounds, and Kate Fielding 11 points, five assists and four boards. Brittany Gliddon finished with eight points and six rebounds as well.

The Wolves won their second match of the season to improve to a 2-1 record following their 30-point triumph over the Senators at Joondalup. The Senators, as a result, fall to 1-4 on the season.

The Wolves had four players who had strong games led by Rebecca Mercer who finished with 18 points and six rebounds while hitting 4-of-9 from three-point territory.

Alex Kerr also had 17 points and five rebounds for Joondalup, Nikita-Lee Martin 15 points, six assists, five boards and three steals, and Shani Amos 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Amber Land did all she could for the Senators finishing with 20 points, 10 rebounds and three assists while Tegan Walker contributed 14 points and five boards, and Cassie Bates nine points and three assists.

Willetton beat Lakeside by 16 points in men's action on Thursday night with the Tigers improving to a 4-1 record as a result while the Lightning slipped to 1-4.

Kyle Armour was again the star of the night for the Tigers ending up with 23 points, seven rebounds and seven assists while shooting an efficient 8-of-14 from the field and 4-of-6 from three-point range.

Corey Easley added 15 points and four rebounds from the bench while Damien Scott had 14 points, five boards and four assists. Ephrem Davis had 12 points, 12 boards and four blocks while Mitchell Clarke contributed 11 points and four assists for Willetton.

Jordan Swing led the way for the Lightning finishing with 24 points and 10 rebounds while Luke Thomas contributed 17 points and 13 boards, and Corey Martin 12 points, three boards and two assists.

The Slammers continued their unbeaten start to the 2015 men's season winning a fifth straight match beating the Magic by 19 points in Mandurah. The Magic falls to a 3-3 record as a result.

Tre Nicholls had another big scoring night for the Slammers ending up with 28 points, three assists and three steals shooting 12-of-23 from the field.

Playing-coach Ty Harrelson also finished with 25 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals while Jordan Hickert added 19 points and six boards off the bench.

Clive Weeden added another 13 points and eight rebounds while Wade Hitchcock scored 11 points and Brian Voelkel pulled in 15 rebounds to go with five assists.

Paul Hafford did all he could for the Magic with 24 points, five rebounds and five assists with Taylor Mullenax finishing with 15 points and eight rebounds, Ben Smith 14 points and seven boards, and Jarrad Jackson 10 points, six rebounds and four assists.

The Wolves also continued their perfect start to the season winning a fourth consecutive match beating the Senators by 30 points at Joondalup. Stirling has now won just one of five matches to start 2015.

Trian Iliadis had a big night for the Wolves leading the way in the win over the Senators finishing with 32 points and six rebounds while captain Seb Salinas celebrated his 300th SBL game in style with 24 points, seven boards and seven assists while hitting 3-of-5 from beyond the arc.

Rob Huntington also finished with 19 points and seven boards for the Wolves with Kevin Davis contributing 12 points, eight rebounds and four assists, and Jordan Wellsteed 10 points and four boards.

Kyle Lindbergh worked hard for the Senators with 22 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and two blocks while Cody Ellis finished with 21 points and six rebounds. Ryan Woodbury also had 17 points for Stirling and Austin Bruton 16.
